Is there a large Asian expat community to be found in SA? I am wondering specifically about Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese. I think the Japanese are in Brazil.... how about Argentina?
If you lived/traveled in this part of the world, give me your wisdom....this is not a pointless wondering, this is a need to know matter........!! |

Hi, I'm currently living in Costa Rica. There are a number of Chinese families living here and a few Koreans and Japanese. There doesn't appear to be any Vietnamese. |

Sao Paulo has over 1 million asians - mostly Japanese.. but also Koreans, etc.
Buenos Aires has about 30,000 Koreans.. Lima has mostly Japanese.. Paraguay has quite a few Koreans - particularly on the borders of Argentina/Brazil with Paraguay.
In other words - Japanese mostly in Sao Paulo and Lima.
Koreans mostly in Sao Paulo, Buenos Airies and Paraguay.
I've heard Panama has a small number of Asians in Panama City.
Haven't ever seen any Vietnamese anywhere in Latin America that I know of. |

Wow. I mean I'm not surprised really. It's a long long way away from Vietnam. |

What do you mean my Asian? If people of East Inidan decent is included, then check out the demographics of Guyana, Surinam and Trinidad. There are several great books written about the East Indian experience in the South America and tbe Caribbean. Also, there are a lot of Chinese in Trinidad, I believe over 10,000 out of a population of over a million.
Also, I believe the president or recent president of Peru is of Japanese decent.
Not South America, but Cuba used to have a large population of Chinese too. Cuban/Chinese food is great. Read up on the Chinese diaspora, and the their migration to S. America and the Caribbean. Great stuff!
Lastly, I believe the reason BJJ started in Brazil is because of the introduction of martial arts of japan. I am not to sure, though. |

Mate of mine whose teaching in Santigao, claims there's loads of Koreans in Chile, apparently the two countries do a lot of trade with each other so many Koreans go over to work there. |

There are tons of Koreans in Argentina. One of the most hated populations too. They started a bunch of cheap clothing stores that they are so well known for that in Tucuman (the city where I lived) the pedestrian shopping streets are now called "los koreanos." |

That doesn't sound like a good situation. So from the sounds of it we are only talking about Koreans and Japanese in SA really. No one has experience with any Vietnamese communities. |

I worked in an expensive private elementary school in Mexico in a border state, but not on the border. We had one family with a Japanese father and one family with a Chinese father. |
