I live in an officetel that is about 1 and a half years old. I have been a resident for 1 year this month. Over the year, the cleanliness of the first floor (where all the businesses are located) has deteriorated significantly. I am amazed at how quickly they have been able to destroy a nice, new building. Anyway, there are boxes, crates, bottles, and other miscellaneous junk throughout the main hallways. Outside, on the walking path, there are mops, crates, boxes, and other junk. Last week there were 4 sets of delivery dishes on the sidewalk. People had ordered delivery to eat at the PC Bong and them put the dishes on the sidewalk. I tripped over some crates last Friday night. Had to go to the doctor this morning about my arm / shoulder. I have repeatedly talked to the maintenance manager (and even some of the businesses) about the problem. I pay a hefty monthly maintenance fee. They don't want to clean it up. If I was to try putting boxes, trash, etc. outside my apartment door (in the hallway), they would flip-out.

Why is it so difficult to understand that we must work together to keep the building clean. If the building stays clean, the resale value on the apartments will be higher over time. Common sense? Maybe not here.

My question... does anyone have any suggestions to get these people to clean up my building?

I had a neighbor that was really bad about leaving trash in the hall for prolonged periods oftime. I've discoverd that persistent annoying knocks on teh door seemed to get them to take out their trash. You might try pestering until they get tired of dealing with the foreigner. That works fora lot o other things too in this country

personally, i wouldn't worry about it too much. korea is a very cluttered country and it's common to pile trash up in stairwells and on street corners. food delivered to apartments is required by the government to be reusable and so customers have to leave the dishes in the halls to be picked up later by the restaurant. the mops and so forth are for the cleaning ajumma who will mop once a week. the maintenence fee covers trash pick up by the city and the ajoshi dude.
