As if any sane person didn't have enough reason to disdain these nationalists:

Quote:
Six Held in Brawl Over Lackluster World Cup Support

Police in the Gyeonggi Province city of Uijeongbu have booked six people after a brawl over the alleged lackluster enthusiasm of one group in cheering the Korean team during a World Cup match broadcast Monday.

Police say the six came to blows at around 4:15 a.m. while watching Korea play France in the World Cup on monitors at the Uijeong city sports stadium.

After France scored the first goal, two people, one of them an office worker identified as Kim, yelled at a group of four people in front, What are you, traitors? Why dont you root more vigorously? Incensed, the four attacked Kim and the person with him, police said. (Chosun)

Perhaps in an effort to negate the negative image of cheering over the injury of a French player a few hours before, Koreans in Germany went to picking up trash.

Rolling Eyes

Namaste.

Makes one wonder what would have happened if there were French supporters there.

Nothing worse than a simplistic nationalist, that's for sure.

9 minutes in though, so still plenty of time...

I have no room for nationalism or pride, or for those who advocate them.

I see no reason to support the Korean team, and numous reasons to support their opponents.

That has nothing to do with nationalism. It has to do with my disdain for their nationalism; among other criticisms.

Namaste.

Well, that answers the question that someone asked in another thread after seeing the mess that was left in Seoul by the people who went to watch the Korea-Togo match.

Were they hoping to trade in all that cardboard for cash?

I was wondering if anyone else had noticed them cheering non-stop while the guy was being taken care of. I had the presence of mind not to mention it to any Koreans knowing 1. they wouldn't get it since few if any have any ide what crowds do in other countries at various kinds of public events and 2. they'd just get pissed off for it being pointed out if they did get it.

And, no, this isn't a bash. Americans sometimes cheer injuries to players, etc., but the difference is the vast majority of OTHER Americans consider them assholes. In Korea, it's a collective lack of awareness and/or rabid nationalism. Different reasons for similar behavior.

As for the trash, well, they take their trash out of theaters and such here, too. Consistent lot, those Koreans.

Duality lives.

That would have to be my reason for wishing their team the worst.

When I first came here, I likely would have cheered Korea on and joined in the celebration. Having lived here three years, I've learned better.

I love it when they do this. It only rounds him down to one fifth of the population. If the same story had been run in England, 'identifying' me by my surname instead of his, most of my family and friends would have known about the incident within a day.

I wonder if they have programmes over here such as Crimewatch, where the public are asked to phone in if they've seen recent criminals based on their description:

"The assailant, aged between 25 and 40, is believed to be around 170cm, slim, with short straight black hair and dark eyes, with a Seoul accent. Please contact us if you've seen him."

No, it wasn't that people physically attacked other people for not cheering enough, it was the other way around. People attacked other people for saying they're not cheering enough.

That means that in Korea, if we are going to start generalizing, you cannot try and force people to show more patriotism otherwise you will be assaulted.

The OP has the whole incident back to front and before this becomes another 19-page thread of ignorant spitting at Korea, he needs to change the title.

He's actually got a point.
