i'm planning to take a trip to india in the near future, but i've found that flights to delhi are pretty expensive. does anyone know of a good travel agent that would be able to help with a trip to india? i'd also like to hear about other people's trips to india. how was it? what'd you do? any suggestions on how to make the best of the country?

i have been surprised by

(a) how many people from back home have been to India

(b) how few ESLers in Korea have been there

(c) how expensive the tickets are from Korea

(d) how cheap the tickets are out of Bangkok

We were in India about 3 years ago and had an amazing time, it is definitely like no other place I've been. It is a very full-on travelling experience, but very, very rewarding.

We went from Australia, so can't help with the flights, but here is a bit of a run down on what we managed to do in a month:

* Delhi
* Rajasthan - 2 weeks with a driver we hired from Delhi, the only way we could have seen so much (Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Udaipur, Bikaner, Pushkar)
* Agra
* Varanassi (by train)
* Darjeeling (by train)
* Gangtok - Sikkim (needed visa, by bus)
* Kolkata (by bus and train)

This was a great selection of cities/regions to showcase India's diversity- from the deserts of Rajasthan to the hill stations and tea fields of Darjeeling.

As you can see, we didn't even touch any of the south. Are hoping to do this in an Asia-Europe overland trip we are planning for next year.

i wish i could...unfortunately, i'm heading to graduate school in the states, which means i'm not going to be in any position to head to india (or anywhere else) for awhile. i did think about just going back to china or southeast asia, but i would like to do something a little different since it's going to be a fairly long time before i can go on another trip. also, if i could get a direct flight, i could spend more time there - but having to go through thailand first is going to leave me with about a week.

i was thinking of a shortish trip to india as well -- maybe 2 weeks or so. it's only about 8 hours from korea so it isn't that long of a flight. i'm getting older ... not so interested in spending months backpacking around a place as difficult as india, but would love to spend a few days in delhi, travel to agra and the taj .... maybe venture to calcutta. bombay and goa would also be cool, but it would be hard to fit in on a 2 week trip. 2 weeks in india and a week in nepal would be perfect. another concern is getting my vaccinations in order before going there. would it be idiotic to go to india without certain vaccinations, even if you were only going for a short time and staying out of the rural areas?

A week is fine in India. Just being there is an experience. Go for it.
