I've asked before and I'll ask again. Doesn't anybody want to work in a semi rural environment any more. Everyone seems to want to work in the big smoke. Colour, age, sexual proclivity, not issues. Where are you people? Just curious because a friends been and no joy. |

I'm in the sticks. I couldn't even begin to say where exactly....it's just that rural. |

Smaller city (Less than 300,000) that is spread over a large area.. so the actual city itself isn't all that big.
I live near the beach though! I can be there in less than 10 minutes.. that rocks. I spent all day at the beach today!
It will probably suck being here in winter though...
I think if I stay in Korea another year I'll give the big smoke a go. |

Small city, northwest of Taegu. Maybe 125000 people. |

I'm currently in a city of 140,000, but my friends town place has a population of just over 40,000. Not big by any standards. |

To the best of my knowledge, there are only four other foreigners in my city/town. |

awesome... a thread for those of us in smallville
I was in a community of 50,000 people on the east coast of Geoje Island, off the southeast coast, until this spring. Felt like a city in some ways: compact and densely populated on a coastal bay, nightlife central for the region, tons of foreigners at the international shipyards.
Almost perfect.
Now I'm in a town a quarter that size, and a tenth in terms of services. Most weekends I head elsewhere, but this is really nice for the regular workweek. But I can't imagine spending many weekends here. Fortunately, with the supercheap buses and trains through here, I don't have to. |

My "town" has "ri" at the end of the name. That should let you know how small it is. |

I liked living in the more rural community. The people were far more friendly and appreciative of what you did. |

I'd be interested in heading to a smallish town if I come back to Korea, but then I see the job offers in some of these places-1.8, some even have shared housing depending on how "small" it is and the same crap vacation as the big cities. Thanks, if that's all you can offer me, I'll take the city. If they can't offer more money, they need to offer more time off. And at the very least single housing. |

I'm sorry, but what does that mean?
Like pet lover, my little burg ends in a 'ri'. I'll bet my 'ri' is smaller than her 'ri'. We have a whopping 7,000 people in our myon (a myon seems to be the rural equivalent of a dong).
In my estimate, a village has 10 to 15 or so homes. Anything bigger is a town. I don't understand people who say they live in a 'small town of 150,000 people'. That's a city where I come from.
And PS, if you want a crappy job, I know of an opening at the end of next month. (The key word is 'crappy', not 'job'.)[/quote] |

Uh, sorry, but my experience is totally different.
I researched about a dozen small town positions - in great detail - this spring, in search of the next perfect fit for me, and I found almost all offered single accommodations, and in fact several huge apartments, entire houses even in two cases. Cheaper in an old town I guess. These are NOT satellite suburbs of Seoul or other modern hamlets close to big cities. Maybe that's a difference. And they ain't on Jeju, typically lower in salary. I found plenty of 2.2 offers this spring in small towns, and I know someone making 2.7 because it's rural! It's harder to get teachers to small towns, so it's easier to negotiate a sweet position.
For example, I only work Monday to Thursday for 2.2 and a huge apartment. Why? Because the recruiter told the school that a 4-day workweek would nab them a foreign teacher. And it did.
Don't be discouraged by a few positions posted. Check out several job boards and a few recruiters. State what you most need and what you really want, and I bet you'll likely get it in a rural place.
Nobody should be stuck in a noisy, crowded, subway-dreary concrete jungle all week long if they don't want to, at least not for an ESLer in Korea!! The salaries are not that different, unless you're in search of the 2.7++ per month positions. |

Yeah, I know it's possible with research and fortitude to find a great rural position. I think I was disgruntled before since I had just been browsing the postings here (even though I am not actively looking right now). I just couldn't understand all these schools, public and hagwon, in "small towns" that were offering the same or worse condition that in Seoul, not counting the cleaner air and greater number of trees (which also brings more spiders, so there's a downside).
Granted, small towns in Korea are not that small after going to high school in a town with 800 people, but they definitely lack some amenities that appeal to me, so I'm just saying, make it up to me.
If I do come back I will probably go semi-rural, but I imagine I'll have to spend more time than in the past in my job search. |

In response to Ya Ta Boy, my friend has been looking for an FT and is offering 2.0, single housing, great living environment, new hogwan, small classes and no joy. Nobody wants to g to the smaller towns and for many of the reasons stated by other posters. Vanislander certainly has a sweet gig, but as he also states he travels out of town on weekends. My hobby is photography, so I actually head off into the boonies on the weekend. If anyone is looking it's a pretty good job and qualified. The family are personal friends. I still do prefer the smaller communities. |
