The director at one of my schools, and his family, has been wonderful to me this year. I would like to give them a special gift before I go home. No, I don't want to give him booze.

Do you have any good ideas? I'm serious guys. They offered me a really great apt for free when my boss gave me a rathole. His wife has cooked for me, washed my clothes, given me fruit from her parent's farm and been very kind.

They have an almost 2 year old daughter who I adore. I thought about getting something really over the top for her, but she has more than any 10 kids I know. I just don't know what's appropriate. Thanks for your help.

This probably won't help you now (this may get others thinking ahead of their departures) but during my travels around Asia on my vacations I picked up a bunch of neat things for the express purpose of having gifts for such occasions.

At the time of my departure I have given to my previous employers gifts that I had brought back from the Philippines (hanging shell chandeliers), Thailand (hand carved elephants), and China (small jadeite figurines).

They always knew when and where I traveled so they were appreciative of the gifts knowing that I was thinking of them when I was away.

Alternatively you can always go to a gift shop and get something engraved in English / Korean that says how much you appreciate their help and friendship during your time here. They would love to hang something in the school lobby, on their office wall or their wall at home.

Words of kindness are always taken in a good way and an engraved plaque or other decoration will last a long time.

For the daughter, get a childrens book like "My First Words Book" and make a notation on the inside front cover. She is 2 and won't remember but a nice hardcover book with the words of wisdom written on the inside cover, it will also be a gift that will last a long time.

See if you can get a nice photo of you and them and have it framed with an engraved tag on the frame. Again a nice gift. It shows thought and heart.

An invitation to visit you back home.....a book of photographs of things you did together......something mushy and sentimental!

Can you make a tape? Give thank you on a tape. That will be cool, and they can play it. Make the daughter a cd of english songs. I havent a clue about jewelry, but can you get the child a charm to wear on a chain> These are great memories.

Buy a huge stuffed toy for the two year old. One of those enormous Poohs or whatever and then take them shopping and let them choose their own gift or give them a gift voucher. Smile

I agree maybe a gift voucher for the director and spouse. For the child I would try to find some good book geared toward learning English. It's a nice way to help the child learn English early and develop an interest in it.

Does anyone know the song that goes has the days of the week and the foods. It goes:

Monday...something?
Tuesday...something?
Wednesday...something?
Thursday roast beef
Friday...soup
etc

Big stuffed bear, flowers for the mum, and really, really good booze for the big guy. Don't knock the significance of good hooch here.

For a guy, I have discovered that good imported booze is great. Not the stuff they locally package in fancy bottles and call "whiskey". For a woman I would go with some western perfume. Kids? I liked the idea of the giant stuffed animal.
