Is there a chance that Korea still won't make it through to the next round?
What needs to happen for them to not move ahead? Who should I be cheering for at this stage (desides Switzerland)?
I've had enough of the noise and chanting. And what's with this 'We are the champions' song. Don't they know that a 'champion' is a person/team that beat all others. Korea came in fourth. It would be adsurd for the first runners up to have such a song. Only in Korea do people think it's okay for the third runners up being proclaimed in song as 'champions.'
This country is freekin bizarre at times. Looking forward to the noisy 'champions' not proceeding to round two. Is it still a possibility?
Thanks. |

party pooper. Obviously you haven't looked at the soccer babes thread or else you wouldn't be whining so much.
If swiss beats Korea and France beats togo, you're set. Gets more complicated if there are ties involved. |

Orthography and semantics aside, am I the only one who finds it absurd ,and greatly ironic, that they use English in a nationalistic song? |

Basically if France beats Togo by 2 goals and Korea and Switzerland draw then Korea is out.
If France wins by one but scores a lot of goals (say 3 or 4) and Korea and Switzerland draw (with Korea not scoring many), Korea is out.
Korea in all likelihood will have to win to advance.
First tiebreaker is Goal Differential (Goals for - Goals against)
Second Tiebreaker is Goals scored.
Third tiebreaker is draw lots.
Go Swiss! ^^ |

It's not possible for Korea not to advance.
The Swiss have no chance of beating Korea. |

| The Swiss don't have to beat Korea to advance. All they need is a tie. |

I second that emotion. I'm not even a big soccer fan and I still thing World Cup really is a fun time to be in Korea. And all the soccer ho's are making it even more exciting than ever. |

GROUP G
Switzerland. Will win the group by defeating Korea. If they draw, they go through (and can still win the group).
Korea. Will win group with a win against Switzerland. Will finish second as long as France loses, draws or beats Togo 1-0. But if Korea draws and France wins by more than one goal, Korea is eliminated (unless France's win is 2-1, in which case they draw lots for second place). If Korea draws and France wins by exactly one goal, it goes to the goals scored tiebreaker.
France. Needs to win to have any chance. If it wins and the Korea-Switzerland game doesn't end in a draw, France finishes second. If France wins and the Korea-Switzerland game ends in a draw, all three teams would have five points. Switzerland would be through no matter what (since their goal difference is better than Korea's), and France and Korea would go to tiebreakers (described above) for the other spot. (If France's margin of victory is large enough, they could win the group, with the Swiss finishing second.)
Togo. Eliminated. |

People on these boards amaze me sometimes. Boo hoo, the Koreans are excited about something. They use an English word "champion" in the wrong context. Why don't you pay attention to their regular conversation, they do this all the time.
Half of the people around here make Scrooge seem like friggin Bono. Grow up and have fun for a change. |

Switzerland will be going balls out to avoid facing Spain.
They haven't conceded a goal yet and their keeper has the most saves of any in the WC.
They have one player with one yellow, and aside from that they've got their full roster clean.
Namaste. |

Man, you said it. I don't really care who wins but some sleep would be nice. But you're right. Where else do they think 4th place is some great freakin' thing to get all strutty about? I'm not much up on soccer, I'll admit but I'll bet dollars to doughnuts the Brazilians or Argentinians or Germans won't be replaying all those games for the next four years and singing 'We are the Champions' if they only get to 4 (or 2 for that matter). Doesn't 4 in Korea signify death? Yay - look at us! We choked at 4! Let's Choke Again 2002! Woohoo! Whatever. |

| They aren't singing "we are the champions" it's more like "you are my champion, we are your champion" |
