|
|
I am just starting my job search and I have a few questions about what I should look for when reviewing job offers from various schools. The biggest question that I have is about my flight to Korea. I have read from various posts that it is pretty standard that schools will often reimburse the teacher for their flight. Is this standard for all schools or should I continue my job search until I find a school that will pay for my flight upfront. Will demanding my flight paid up front limit my job prospects? I have money saved and could probably pay for my flight but I want to make sure I have enough money when I get over there so that I have a safety net just in case the worst happens. I would greatly appreciate any feedback. |

Most schools/hogwans will pay the flight up front if there is time. Korea is very image oriented. If they like what you look like and how you answered the questions on the telephone, then you are a famous person to them. Are you working with a recruiter or searching on your own? I wouldn't worry about the flight being paid up front. If that is your main worry right now then you will be in great shape for the roller coaster that you may or may not be on once you arrive. Stay positive and remember that there are plenty of ESL jobs to go around. There is for sure many here that will suit you. On the other hand, you have more leverage finding the better job if you paid for the flight yourself and searched from Korea. Either way I wish you the best of luck.

i told my director that i could only come over if my flight was prepaid in advance...like many other teachers i did not have the money to pay for the initial flight to korea...
what made things easier is that i took over my friends old job at her hagwan... she organised for the director to pay for my one way airfare....
if they dont pay for your airfare in advance you should get a one way reimbursed to you when you arrive and the return part of the fare at the end of the contract |

It's up to the discretion of the school whether they pay flight money or not. Many schools pay it, but not all. It's not a legal requirement for them to do so unless they stipulate it in a contract.
In my opinion, whether an employer pays flight money is the least of my concerns when seeking out a new job. I'd be much more concerned about working hours and overall salary, as well as whether the place of work was going to be a reputable one. Flight money can mean little when the rest of your job sucks.
I think anyone who doesn't have enough financial resources to back themselves up with their own flight ticket shouldn't take the risk of setting off to a distant land with no idea of the job they are entering into. You never know what disaster you may be setting yourself up for. Get some financial reserve first. |
