The first hotel I stayed at in Korea, back in 2000, was the Amiga Hotel (now the Imperial Palace). I chose the hotel because back in the late '80s, early '90s there was a sweet computer called the Amiga. The Amiga computer was heavily used by small TV stations and low end video production facilities. Amiga was doing video editing long before iMac. Anyway, much to my surprise, the hotel's logo even resembled the Amiga computer's logo. Hrm! Not having any experience with Korea, I considered the name/logo similarities an amazing coincidence. Gosh I was so innocent back then. Over the years my memory has grown hazy and I thought maybe I was just imagining the logo similarity.

A year or two ago, the hotel under went a major renovation and renamed itself the Imperial Palace. Well, now I'd never know if the Amiga Hotel logo really looked like the Amiga computer logo. This weekend my GF and I stayed there as a kinda weekend getaway thingy, nostalgia thingy. ("And at this point, honey, two blocks from the hotel, I realized 'oh my god everyone on this street is Korean except for me' and I went back to my hotel room.") Much to my joy, the hotel hasn't totally done away with the old Amiga logo. I guess as things need to be replaced, they're replacing it with new Imperial Palace flagged stuff. Sure enough, my memory was correct. The name and logo of the Amiga Hotel were suspiciously close to the logo of the Amiga computer:

Hotel logo:

Computer logo:

This I found odd:

Now the new interior is all dark wood and wrought iron. Very classy. When I stayed there before the renovation, it was all done up in a sort of country garden court motif. What's odd is the A should be IP. I noticed this a lot in the hotel. A mix of Imperial Palace and new stuff done up with the Amiga name. It occurs to me the only explanation is half assed Korean planning. Someone at the last moment decided the renovations were looking so good (and they were) that they might find a more befitting name like.... oh... Imperial Palace. But clearly some of the expensive decor had been done up assuming the Amiga name would continue.

Some other random hotel shots:

The Amiga was great. I wish it had continued on. The games on it were way ahead of their time and I have often tried to track down emulators to play the games again. I liked Fairy Tale Adventure. It was kind of the earliest version of Oblivion.
