Greetings... firstly, I would like to say a big thankyou to this forum for being a wealth of info for this gal about to take a leap of faith over to South Korea!!
Ok, syrupy (yet deserved) greetings aside... I am considering a contract with Oregon Language Institute of Chilgok in Daegu... has anyone got any info please on the hagwon? I had a phone interview with one of the directors Mrs Kwak - she seemed lovely! (and yes I have googled the name and I am not sure she is the same lady others have posted on?)
Also - I would appreciate some advice on the following clause from my contract... I have avidly studied the stickies and several months of posts... however would not mind some advice as I want to ensure my taxes etc are correct... note: I plan on querying the medical insurance - appears I am not in the National plan!
A. The period of a calendar month is accounted for as a payment session.
B. The monthly compensation will be 2,000,000 Korean Won to be paid on each payday.
C. Income tax (3%) + residence tax (0.3%), health insurance(1.5%), and pension (3%) will be deducted off the salary according to Korean tax laws. Note that for health insurance and pension, the Korean laws stipulate that the employer pays half and the teacher pays half.
D. If applicable, the overtime pay will be 18,000 won per working hours.
E. Attendance at scheduled staff meetings and workshops are mandatory and are not accounted for as overtime.
F. The salary will be paid on the 1st day of each month. However the payment for the last month plus the severance pay will be made on the teacher's last workday.
Thanks again! |

I think something funny is going on with C. I'm fairly sure pension is 4.5% each. As for health insurance I think it's 2.24?
You definitely want the National Plan. See the thing is that if they put you in a private plan it's cheaper for them. Plus they don't have to register you for pension, which could mean that your pension deductions go back into your boss's pocket.
2 million is kinda low...but the rest of the contract seems okay. |

Medical/Korean National Health Insurance Plan
http://www.nhic.or.kr/wbe/faq/faq.html
The employer will enroll the worker in the Korean National Healthcare Insurance Plan. The worker will be physically presented with his medical insurance card on __________/__________/__________. The sum of 3 months contribution, **********, will be prepaid by 3 month intervals (the contribution payment duty is retroactive to the day he was registered for his residence in Korea) except for the permanent foreign resident. Responsibility to pay said sum of 3 months contribution is upon the employer. The employer will deduct **********(2.24%) from the worker's monthly salary and pay it to the National Health Insurance Corporation per month throughout the contract period.
A. The period of a calendar month is accounted for as a payment session.
B. The monthly compensation will be 2,000,000 Korean Won to be paid on each payday.
There should be contractutal langugage stating what your "guaranteed monthly salary" will be in the amount of ________ Korean Won throughout the contract period. This clause should be detailed. It would also benefit you if you had contractual language stating you would be paid your base monthly salary if your employer couldn't provide you with enough classes/hours to be worked per month throughout the contract period. Some Korean bosses have been known to pay their employees less, since they weren't able to provide them with enough classes/hours to be worked.
C. Income tax (3%) + residence tax (0.3%), health insurance(1.5%), and pension (3%) will be deducted off the salary according to Korean tax laws. Note that for health insurance and pension, the Korean laws stipulate that the employer pays half and the teacher pays half.

3% Income Tax: 60,000
Income tax is 28,950 (Check on the above website)
Get the correct % & monthly deduction that will be taken out of your monthly salary throughout the contract period written in your contract.
D. If applicable, the overtime pay will be 18,000 won per working hours.
Ask for 20,000 won per overtime hour.
An overtime clause should be detailed. Your employer should include contractual language that states overtime pay, mutual consent between both parties before overtime hours/classes are worked, and language defining what constitutes an overtime class/hour.
E. Attendance at scheduled staff meetings and workshops are mandatory and are not accounted for as overtime.
F. The salary will be paid on the 1st day of each month. However the payment for the last month plus the severance pay will be made on the teacher's last workday.
Works for me.
Thanks again! |

Get an exact pay day date. For example the instructor willl receive his/her salary on the 25th day of each month. If this day should fall on a weekend or public holiday the instructor will receive his/her salary on the nearest working day preceeding the 25th day of the month.
