So I got here about two and a half weeks ago. Things are work are going just dandy, and now I need to set up my techno-utopia. I have a few questions:
*Where can I get a cheap-ass computer?
I don't need too much because I'm a linux user..... I just prefer it to be cheap.
*Anyone know if there is work for english-speaking A+ techs around? I have my A+ certification, and Id love to pick up a little extra cash in my native field.
*Can anyone tell me the name of the ISP that gives you 100mbps down/up for $50 / month. How do they deliver this access, anyway? How do I order it?
Thanks!

Yongsan Electronics Market is pretty good, you can self build or get one of the guys to build you a good system at a pretty reasonable price. Just get off at Yongsan station or Sinyongsan in Seoul.
I tend to buy a MB and chip combination second hand and put it togetther myself. You can buy everything there easily and cheaply and buying second hand stuff will save you a lot of money.
Regarding internet Hanaro or KT seem to be the most common providers, get a Korean to give them a call and they'll be out the same day if you're lucky. It should take them less than half an hour to hook you up if they know what they're doing.
I suggest VDSL for fastish internet and it will probably cost you less than 50 bucks a month, our package comes coupled with the cable TV. I just have a little VDSL box that plugs into my 100mbps network card. |

To give you an idea of prices, this is what I bought last year in Yongsan:
Athlon 1000
512MB ram
80 GB hdd (2 X 40)
64 MB video card
dvd burner (Lite-On, 8X)
19" monitor (crt)
all the other bits and pieces
Cost: $200.
Specs will be a little higher this year, but you can get a decent enough machine for a couple hundred bucks if you look around enough. Don't go to the first outdoor market you come to in Yongsan... Hunt further back (way back) and you'll find cheaper places where the vendors are nicer and there are fewer foreigners. |
