I'm guessing I'll get reamed on this post, so just to preempt any attacks, I'm not going to Korea for the women, although on the other hand, I don't hope to be dateless for my entire time there either.

I guess I'll find out soon enough, but I was wondering if all Korean women of relative youth are pretty well stick thin. I went to high school about ten years ago with about 12 Korean girls or so (exchange students) and they were all rail thin and constantly on diets. No offense to any thin women on the boards, but that isn't exactly my tastes.

For me a good looking women of average height is usually like 160 pounds or more. (So I like thick women, shoot me). Anyways, are there any women say in their twenties and thirties this size or maybe close to it? If so do they have a total complex about not being thin enough? (Of course this can be a problem over here too).

Frankly, I can go for a one year contract and maybe more without a single date if need be and not be complaining about it all the time, but I'm wondering if I should mentally prepare myself for that.

Of course, maybe I could open up my preferences a bit, but if they're all like 105 pounds thats gonna take some serious adjusting on my part.

Thoughts?

Yes, personality is the most important trait, but can any of us deny that attraction is important?

How about Wendy's, I don't like McDonalds? Very Happy

Well if you like bigger women and Wendy's, you'll starve in Korea.

And there's nothing scarier than seeing a 90-pound girl putting herself on a diet.

Unfortunately many k-girls don't put on weight very well. But tastes change. Before I was quite attracted to taller, more athletic types. I found many women carrying a bit of weight also looked quite nice, too, especially if they were taller - 5'7-10", 150-170lbs might look really hot in the case of some women. Grunge was cool. So was punk. So was sporty. Now I look at so many white women and think, what a bunch of fat slobs. No, not all of them, of course, but tastes really do change. Now I can't believe I lived in and around Vancouver for so long without going after any Asian chicks.

Of course say that here and suddenly you're worse than Hitler with a certain, rather bitter crowd.

I say there's a lot of pressure on the girls here, since "slightly overweight" in Korea is "obese".

You do see girls who have a bit of meat on 'em - good thing too IMO - but the main state of affairs is thin if you aks me.

You might not find many at 160 lb., but if you're seeking chicks that are a good 140-150, you can pretty much guarantee yourself about a 90% success rate. They'll love the attention, I'm sure. The pressure to be thin is way more extreme here than in the US.

I disagree that the pressure for women to be thin in Korea is greater than in the US. There is a huge dieting industry in the US. Probably bigger than here. A high percentage of American women are on a diet. Don't know the comparative figures between Korea and the US but I doubt Korea's is higher. (Of course there is dieting going on in Korea and people with eating disorders and a problem of rising obesity like everywhere else.) Many Korean women are naturally slim and don't need to diet. Not all the thin women you see are artificially like that or dieting. Too many assumptions are being made in this thread. And as the OP said, being too thin is unattractive to a lot of people, and I know quite a few skinny women who want to put on weight but can't.

I would just say that more Korean women are naturally slim than western women. Whether it is due to genetics, the traditional Korean diet (or some other factor), or a mixture of these I am not sure. There is also the issue of racial homogeneity: Korean women are thinner than westerners so you are going to see a lot of thin women, people are going to cluster around a norm more tightly, you aren't going to see much variation in weight. I doubt the thinness is due to a higher percentage of Korean women obsessing about their weight than American women. Women in the US may be fatter but I don't think they are this way from lack of trying to be thin. Men in the US are fatter than Korean men. Are Korean men more into dieting than American males?

And let's face it: everybody is thinner than Americans.

There are quite a few fatties around there, though....People notice the thin, beautiful ones, but you can try to adjust your eyesight and notice the others...

It's like the last episode of Scrubs, where JD couldn't see women who wear wedding rings....They didn't exist as far as he was concerned, which is true with guys and overweight, ugly women who are strangers.

I heard quite a few men in the US saying that they prefer women with "some meat on their bones". Several of my friends even felt that way. I've never heard this from Korean guys.

Also, I hear my students describing people who are just a little overweight as "fat" or "very fat", and giggling hysterically.

That's what I meant.

Q.

I'd say there's probably more direct pressure to be thin here. People are more likely to come out and tell their friends that they are fat.

As for me (an American in Korea), some people tell me I'm thin, but then others turn around and ask my husband if we're expecting.

All this talk of women with some meat on their bones and juicy bacon burgers is making me hungry.
