A teacher (white male from Canada) recently left my school after completing a 12 month contract. Evidently, he can't find a new job (he's refusing to move out of his apartment until he finds a new job- been squatting since May). Anyone have any idea why this would happen to someone with a year of experience? Could the school's reputation (I'm certain it's not good) have anything to do with this? Or is it probably his education Rolling Eyes or qualifications? Any ideas?

(BTW, I don't want this school's bad reputation to follow me, so I'd like to know if this stuff happens).

he is squatting? The boss should call the cops and get the guy thrown out. Press charges too.

So this guy's been out of work for a month, and still gets a free apartment? Man, he's got it sweet! Your boss must be some sort of pushover! See what you can get out of it!

He's probably not looking very hard, if at all.

Prospective employer reads application, calls previous employer. He's refusing to leave your apartment? Thank you. Deletes application.

it could be that the boss does not mind that he is still in the apartment. the OP probably does not know the full story.

Wow! He's lucky he's got a place to stay still. A guy at my old school left his previous school, went home, and flew back to look for work. His old school ALLOWED him to stay in the apartment until he found a new job. LUCKY!!!

Could be, but the fact that "he's refusing to move out of his apartment until he finds a new job- been squatting since May" doesn't sound like an agreement between friends.

If he is, in fact, refusing to leave - despite requests to go - then it doesn't take much imagination to understand his employment situation.

that's weird. not enough details to really comment. but unfortunately anyone can find a teaching job in seoul. i used to freelance for a dodgey recruiting agency that went bankrupt, and they had monthly meetings with all their teachers. needless to say it was a strange mix of non-native speakers from all over the world. various ages and levels of english. some bad hair styles to.

Perhaps his old boss is giving him a bad reference. Refusing to move out of the apartment is a really good reason to do so. It's really not that hard to figure out this situation.

This sounds like the likely story to me. I would give the guy a bad reference too!

This is the attitude that makes the Korean bosses such d^*cks. A nice boss and the first thing you think of is how much you can screw him over for.

Funny, I've always thought it was Korean bosses being such dycks that led to teachers having that kind of attitude.

Kind of a chicken-and-egg dilemma.

Um, this being Korea I would think the opposite.
His old boss would give him a fabulous reference so he would move into the apartment which comes with his new job.
