I was also woken up at 5:30 this morning, right around the time Korea scored. I am already exhausted today and my classes haven't even started. Monday is also my busiest day of the week, I just hope I make it through.

You'll make it. As will I, who watched most of Brazil/Australia and got up again for Korea.

Yes, you'll make it. And be better for it!

I couldn't sleep at all last night. Finally fell asleep around 3 only to be woken up at 5:30. It's just a tie game...do we really need the chants?

I got up at 5:00 to watch the 2nd half. I was floored at the screaming in my apartment building (and neighbourhood) when they scored around 5:30. Korea was lucky to tie. I thought France was the better team in the second half. As usual, France just couldn't put the ball between the posts.

You know, I'm all for the better team winning, but Korea seems to have some big horseshoes in World Cups.

The thing that gets me is that it's not about soccer, it's about KOREA. I mean, most Koreans don't follow the regular Korean soccer season, don't have a clue about the game, and then come world cup time, they are suddenly rabid soccer fans. It always comes down to nationalism and pride.

In Canada, people who don't watch hockey don't watch the Stanley Cup. They don't care today and they won't tomorrow. Even during the Olympics, I never met anyone who wasn't a hockey fan change into a flag-waving zealot overnight. Sure, some national pride is cool...why not? But my oh my...it's just way over the top here.

Of all the ways for Korea to improve their global image, they sure choose strange ways to try to achieve it.

Anyways, congrats to the players on the Korean team. They always seem to pull it out of the fire, so kudos to them.

Why do you dudes always have to put Korea down?

Those fans are great. They give their team a lift. The are the noisiest most rabid fans in the tournament. They love their team and their country. So what?

Yeah all the jingoism crap wouldn't feel so weird if it was coming from the same country that sent death threats to Apollo Ono and holds hate-storm condlelight vigils for accidental foreign military-related deaths.

demo is RIGHT!

On FRIDAY night, I wanted to watch the NL-CIV game in my neighbourhood. There are4 bars near my house. I went out at 1:30. TWO bars were closed. One was closing and one would turn on the TV.

Forget it man. It REALLY isn't about soccer and it PEEEEESSSES me off that I can't watch my team on a FRIDAY NIGHT at a completely reasonable hour? you know they stayed open until all hours on sunday.

That farkin' pissed me off

Otis is right, and people here are often bitter about the Korean team through unrelated reasons like their visa contracts or general dislike of the country. Plus the noise; Korea's always been noisy. I don't think Korea has ever pretended to be rabid football fans either, just rabid Korea fans. They were pretty impressive with their little 꽹가리's and whatnot over even over in Europe.
I fell asleep after the first half so this was some welcome news when I got up.

It's just a little scary is all the level that koreans bring it (patriotism/jingoism whatever) too. I guess ovewhelming is probably more of an appropriate term. If i wasn't living here and faced with it everyday i wouldn't give a crap but day after day of "ohh pisso korea" and " Dae han min guk" etc. etc. adnauseum starts to take it's toll after a while. thank god i'm going to Itaewon this weekend to hang out with some whiteys who like me couldn't really give 2 stuffs about the WC.
