I was looking at the World Ranking on FIFA's website. How in the blue hell do they figure this out?

1 Brazil
2 Czech Republic
3 Netherlands
4 Mexico
5 USA
5 Spain
7 Portugal
8 France
9 Argentina
10 England

Mexico is the 4th ranked team in the world? The USA is 5th?

Seems dodgy to me.

the rankings are crap..but here's how they get them.

Quote:
The ranking list is produced by a computer program which assigns a team points for every match, according to clearly defined criteria. The factors taken into consideration are:

1. Winning, drawing and losing
2. Number of goals
3. Home or away match
4. Importance of the match (multiplication factor)
5. Regional strength (multiplication factor)

For each team only the seven best results per year are given full weighting. Results from the past are given progressively less weighting year by year until after eight years they are dropped completely. In this way current success is rated more highly than past results.

It is always nice to hear from the peanut gallery.

Did I mention surprise at Brazil being number 1? Of course not.

Did I say anything about Korea deserving to be in the number 1 spot? Of course not. They don't.

I was surprised to see Mexico ranked 4th and the USA 5th.

I think all that time with your head up your posterior has caused brain damage. You really should find something better to do with your free time.

Thanks Jurassic.

That is a pretty convoluted way of determining position. I figured it would just be done by wins, losses, and ties.

Oh well, it isn't like it actually affects the game. Except for some poor unsuspecting or unknowing fool who puts too much faith in the rankings and bets the wrong way.

The US and Mexico play in the weakest group on the planet (CONCACAF). They get to beat up on football nations like Canada. Laughing

Anything to get your cheap digs in eh Zulu...

As for the rankings they are crap...one glance shows that clearly as there is no way the US and Mexico rank higher than some of the better european teams...

When you're playing against the 'Big Guns' - Belize, Honduras, Panama and the like, it's fairly easy to rack up points.

Yeah, like pretend to know more about FIFA rankings than the people at FIFA. But I'm sure they'll change the list to your preference if you email them that their methods "seem dodgy to you". Laughing

I know nothing about soccer but neither do I start threads pretending to know more than the experts. Talk about having too much free time. Rolling Eyes
