Just out of curiousity, why is everyone glad that Korea lost? It would seem to me that people living in Korea would want Korea to win if for nothing but the parties.
Is it because your team lost or never played in the World Cup finals? Is it jealousy? Hatred for Korea? Are you tired of seeing people cheering for their nation's team? Is it the nationalism, because I bet that if you were to walk through downtown London right now you'd see people cheering for England just like the Koreans were doing for Korea. Maybe I'm just sane and rational, but I don't get it.
Someone please explain to me why everyone is celebrating the loss of a country that, had they done well, would have only served to benefit the average ESL teacher in Korea. |

They prefer an extra hour of sleep to hanging out with girls competing with each other on how little they can wear while watching the game.
Either that or they're brave soldiers fighting against rabid nationalism, their staunchest foe. Good job, ESL Warriors! Which rabid nationalist/racist beast will they slay next? Perhaps the Janjaweed? |

I also wondered this in 02 when I lived in Seoul. It seemed all of us were cheering against Korea----a place that was good to us.
I think the reason is that Korea are poor winners---arrogant. There is always luck in sports but to suggest that to Koreans is almost seen as racist. 02 the parties were fun for a bit but then became insufferable...When they finally lost Koreans declared the Germans were on drugs...The sameness of peoples thinking was scary-------almost something Nuremberg rallyish about it all.
4 years on and back home though----I ended up sort of cheering for them----(I wonder if the ref will public enemy number1 now?) |

Nah. I'm American. Even before we lost out I was pulling for Korea as long as they didn't play the US. I had already received 5 free beers just for saying "Go Korea!" in a bar.
Now, I can't get any free beer. Is that reason to cheer?
I just think it's asinine to say "Yay! Korea lost! Now, I can work with a bunch of sulking Koreans, get dirty looks for wearing my USA kit, and watch replays of old Korea games instead of watching live soccer."
I am still waiting for real answers from those people who've posted on the countless "Thank God Korea lost!" threads. |

It's because a few years from now you'll still be hearing about this game from one or more Koreans whenever you mention anything about Switzerland, as if it still had just happened a few days ago. |

I'm curious about this, too. I was rather indifferent regarding the World Cup, since I don't care about sports in the slightest degree, but if I had to choose any team to make it all the way it would be Korea. Why? Because I live here... root, root, root for the home team! If they don't win, it's a shame. |

My theory: The people who do this are the ones who over-react when they get overcharged by a taxi driver or feel cheated at their job. There seems to be a tendency when angry to blame all Koreans for the misbehavior of one. Kind of a lemming-like reaction if you ask me. |

Its not only Koreans
Just mention Korea to any Italian or Spaniard and they will start going into a whole lecture about how Korea cheated |

I do not respond well to anything that deprives me of my sleep. Perhaps if I started teaching in the afternoons, it'd be a little different, but when you teach morning kindergarten, you can get a little rabid over your sleeping time. If the games were held during Korean daytime, I wouldn't have a problem with it. If Koreans were capable of watching the games quietly, I wouldn't have a problem with it. But, no, they must set up chairs and tables and large screen TVs with huge loudspeakers in the streets of a little neighborhood and serve everyone beer. The guy living next to me is not much better what with his large group of drunken friends. Korea lost. I can sleep now. To me, that's worth cheering about. |

I was sad that they lost... it was good to have some fun and seeing all the glum faces on saturday. Seems to me that there is a group of people that are unhappy with their life here, and will use any excsue to belittle a country due to precieved injustices. |
