It totally depends on what the kid is into and what his personality is like..
U of T is the ideal urban university.. smack in the middle of downtown TO..
UBC is way more laid back and relaxed..
Both are great schools that are near huge Korean populations though..
Personally, I would choose U of T... simply because if he wants primo internships and the like, TO is the place to be... |

Well he'll have more fun at UBC but if he can get into U of T (toughest in Canada-about 92% required by a Candian HS grad-can't even guess how much higher it must be for a foreign student)) that is the most prestigious degree in Canada right now. |

I attended the University of Toronto in the mid '90s. It seemed to be a dull, pretentious school full of Ontarians. The city itself did not impress me as "world class" despite it boosters nauseating claims that Toronto is such a remarkable place in which to live. Really, the University of Western Ontario (London, Ont.) was a much better experience. |

Tell him to send his kid to a Korean University. Every foreign student that takes a place in a Canadian university means one less Canadian student can attend. Universities Chancellors in Canada love foreign students because they can charge huge tuition fees, while Canadian students are partially subsidized by the government and the fees are capped. More foreign students, more money goes to the school and all their little pet projects. Most campuses in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa already look like China town and the UofT actually teaches some of its courses in Mandarin and Cantonese. That's not right! The reason UofT and UBC are so difficult to get into these days is because they get 10,000,000 applications from Asia every year and they need to set high standards. The 250,000 Canadian students who come of age and make applications annually can't compete. |

If he's into hiking as most Koreans seem to be, he'll love Vancouver. Ditto with the sailing/skiing, etc. Toronto is crap for all these things. |

Mayhap some of them should lay off the weed and hit the books instead. |

Preston Manning once said at an election debate, "I come from western Canada, where for a century we've had Asian and eastern European immigrants. We knew what multiculturalism was before you guys invented the term."
Universities around the world (good ones, at least) like to brag about how many foreign students they have. They bring new ideas and influences. Restrictions against them in Canada would lead to restrictions against Canadians studying in other countries, likely.
Just my observation and 2c: I find Seoul like Toronto and Busan like Vancouver. To a homesick Korean who's probably nervous about going, to me feeling comfortable would be more important than debating which university is better. They're both good unis.

The MacLeans rankings aren't worth the balls they're written on. |

A major factor is what his major will be. This applies to any "ranking" of a University or College. |

If he like nature and a more laid back atmosphere, UBC
U of T is an exciting place. As well, great reputation in Korea. I went there and when I mention this to Koreans most of them liken it to Harvard ... (ah, if they only knew) Another bonus, Korea Town in 5 minutes from UofT's downtown campus so he can get his kimchi, k-pop etc. fix |
