What do Koreans think about Star Trek? Do they like the fact that a major characher, Harry Kim, is meant to be of Korean heritage? Even though the actor who plays him is Chinese/American (Garrett Wang).
Just curious. |

I have a Chinese friend who enjoys Star Trek. Yet, he complains that they mix up Asian ethnicities.
Harry Kim = Chinese actor
Linda Park = Japanese character
I was hoping they'd give Daniel Dae Kim a bit more to do when he was in Enterprise. |

Yeah, totally. Not to mention that guy who plays Worf isn't really a Klingon. |

| Interestingly, "ferengi" means "foreigner" in Hindi. |

Gene Roddenberry intentionally made the different alien races on Star Trek resemble human groups. The Borg are meant to be a dangerous powerful collective that could take over everyones lives (Soviets). The Klingons are meant to be savage, second class citizens in the universe but physically stronger than humans (ring any bells...?). Ferengis are greedy little bastards who try and make money at any cost and worship profits above anything else (Jews). The Europeans are portrayed by the set in their ways Vulcans (West Europeans) and their distant cousins the Romulans (Police state East Europeans). They have old wisdom and see themselves as superior in contrast to the young brash United Federation of Planets (americans) who are the center of the series. |

A lot of those assertions have changed over time. Originally the Klingons were a lot different, with their Fu Manchu moustaches and political cunning.
Maybe it's just me but in Enterprise, I got the impression the Vulcans were portrayed as the US. |

Oh that's just not right man! I guess the Klingons are supposed to be the Arabs or the Africans then??? The thing I've always loved about Star Trek is that ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation are pretty much left out of the equation and look at what a wonderful universe you've got! I never made comparisons between real life ethnicities and the Star Trek species. The whole point of the Federation is tolerance and peace amongst the different planets. |

| I really want, just once, for them to have had an episode in which Christmas is mentioned as still being celebrated. Like Data sets up a Christmas tree on the bridge and Worf kicks the hell out of it. The only holiday ever mentioned was "Captain Picard Day." |

Why Christmas?
It was a Pagan feast, assimilated by the Christian Church.
I hope you do know where the pine tree and the candles come from? |

So why can't pagans celebrate Christmas in the future? It's more than just a holiday for Christians. I think science fiction should have a lot to say about the rituals of Christmas in the future.
Or are you just mad that there's no International Trolls Day? |
