| My friend is taking part in an international legal conference for Asian nations. The working language is English. There's just something a little weird about that. Is using English as a lingua franca between Asian nations less national pride emasculating than, say, adopting Mandarin as the linqua franca of Asian trade and diplomacy? |

It's a pretty normal compromise. Don't you think anyone would object of they all had to learn Mandarin? The Japanese would certainly demand everyone learn Japanese instead.
