It's official: 장마 as arrived. The rain started here at 7:38 this evening. I've got my hip boots, my reinforced umbrella, my plastic rain poncho and plastic sandals and my 5 days emergency supply of food...are you prepared?

It's really not that bad. There are far more days of drizzle than of real rain. It is smart to avoid creeks and other places when it's raining (or might) heavily. There are always people getting washed away in flash floods and hills slipping down in the valleys.

The other bad things to watch out for: black mold from all the humidity. Be sure everything that can be ventilated has some chance for the air to move around. Don't wait till the last minute to do laundry and expect it to be wearable anytime soon. Some years the sun doesn't come out for weeks on end, so if you are affected by that, prepare yourself as best you can. It can get gloomy. In '97 the sun didn't shine for 6 weeks, but that is unusual.

Can anyone else think of anything people who haven't experienced a rainy season should know?

[It's odd that the title won't print Korean words, but the body of the post will. Never noticed that before.]

Yeah, it's gonna get as hot and humid as hell when the rain stops...at least you will think so if you're not somewhat used to that sort of thing.

I hope THAT never comes around again. Living through that thing was one of the worst experiences of my life. I wouldn't wish it on an enemy.

No its not.

A simple look at the 5-Day forecast for Seoul will tell you that.

Yes, it is. The Chosun Ilbo said so. If you can't take the Chosun Ilbo at its word, who can you?

Are you going by the Chosun Ilbo published today, or are you going by the article that was published by them in May which has been circulating on here stating that it would start on the 19th of June...

Perhaps you'd be better to go by the actual weather forecasts stating that Thurs will be Sunny Spells, Friday will be Foggy, and Saturday and Sunday will be completely Sunny...

Rain sucks in Seoul. Everything seems to get dirtier in my neighbourhood when it rains and it is as humid as hell.
However Korean weather forcasters are like their kind anywhere. It hasn't rained much at all. Razz
