So, I'm half Korean (on my mom's side) and well, I look Asian enough, but I don't speak a word. Don't understand any of it either. I've read some articles about people who look Korean getting approached by native Koreans, who upon finding out you don't speak Korean, are shocked and appalled and downright humiliated and run off in shame.
Any of this sort of thing happen to any other half-Koreans/gyopos? Anything else I should be wary of? Maybe it'll be nice sort of blending in, but maybe it'll hurt me at other times, since I don't speak the language.
What do you guys think? |

Depending on your visa and the citizenship status of your parent you may have a great opportunity to learn your Korean during your 2 years of conscripted military service. |

I guess it would have helped to mention I'm a girl. The F-4 visa is nice though, even though I'm not in Korea yet. |

I have a half Chinese friend here whom everyone thinks is Korean. So everyone speaks Korean to him and he always has to explain that he is not Korean. I guess he gets a little tired of it.
I've had Korean/American friends who have had some trouble, but usually not too much.
A lot of it will depend on your own attitude and response to them.
I hope you have a lot of patience. Does your mom speak Korean? If so you should try to learn a few phrases from her about not being able to speak Korean and where you are from.
Anyway, come with a positive attitude and you will have a great time here.
Good luck and have fun! |

Not true. For overseas Koreans, your visa status and parent's citizenship has nothing to do with determining tmilitary service requirements. A Korean American, born and raised in the U.S., for example, would be liable for conscription if: a) He is between the ages of 20-35; and b) His name has been entered in his family's hojujok -- or family registry, or c) His name and ID number has been entered into MMA's (Military Manpower Administration's) computer. Otherwise, ROK gov't can't touch him. |

Every time I am out and about, Koreans approach me for information or try to sell me God. I am not Korean, and although I am Asian I cannot understand why they think I am Korean, because I do not even dress like one.
Anyway, I usually just ignore them, shrug my shoulders or say "I don't know" (in Korean) or "I am not Korean"; or if I am feeling pi.ssy, speak back in English. No big deal.
Never had anyone run off in shame and looked appalled, etc though. |

What is the other half?
Are there different Korean terms for half Korean/half white; 1/2 Korean/ 1/2 Black; 1/2 Korean/ 1/2 Chinese; etc.... |

My other half is white, but not like blond-haired/blue-eyed white, and all my Asian features dominated. My mom says Koreans will know I'm not full Korean, where as everyone white I know thinks I look completely Asian. Oh well. |

Most importantly, are you hot? j/k!
Don't worry too much about that. Most halfies come across as something exotic so you might get a few stares but that's about it. They will have something to say about why you can't speak Korean though nothing to worry about.
There are many other Asians living in this country, unsurprisingly. |

Hey, I am half Welsh, and other than the fact that my entire family is fricken short (I am the tallest, at 5'8'') and I never get called on my exotic looks |

there's a bit of a fetishization of half-koreans going on in pop culture nowadays. if you look in japanese fashion magazines, you'll notice that many of the models are mixed race, and korea is starting to pick up on that trend. i suppose it's a mixed blessing. you might have koreans staring at you and excitedly cooing about your 'high' nose and 'big' eyes. which will be fun exactly once and then annoying from thereon.
rocklee might have been kidding, but it's kinda true. if you're hot, koreans will find you to be very hot sh*t because you're hot and exotic. you might even wind up doing commercials for vitamin drinks. haha.
ps--seriously, though, are you hot? hehe

Many Japanese men think that if you're good enough get a 'half' girlfriend then you yourself must be (or at least have) something special. In other words, while relatively rare, they're in demand. I know I've seen a fair amount of half-Asian girls around, many of whom were certainly quite easy to look at (though perhaps the single ugliest girl I've ever met in my life was also a half-Japanese half American, so nothing's for certain ...).
California especially seems to half a lot of really fit half-Japanese girls, for some reason. Anyway, I don't really care what they are as long as they're hot... |
