99 Windows Tweaks
Anyone feel like discussing which, if any, of these are worth trying? |

| You can get programs which will auto tweak your system with most of the things listed in that article... much easier and faster, and also much less chance of screwing it up |

Linux helps Windows perform better?
From my understanding, Linux runs well because there is no other software one can install to bog it down. |

Exactly what's wrong with the Tech Forum. Too often someone posts a link to some useful site, only to have the response "What? You read that? My tech site is so much better!" without providing a link. Well, yeah, great, you've got a better site (program), why don't you put up a link to it?
I remember I put up a link site to Black Viper's Windows 411 once. I titled it something like "Windows Tweaks." I recall one of the very first responses was just like the one above, and another response was criticizing my title for only referring to the site as "tweaks" because it was such an essential site. Well, if it was so damn essential, why was I the first person to put a link to it then? |

| I really like Tuneup Utilites 2006. It's shareware and can be found at http://www.tune-up.com . It does a lot of cool things for the Windows PC, like cleanup, optimizing, file recovery, etc. |

Agreed. It's a real silly 'contest' in this area...who knows more, who has the better rig, etc... .
The link is great, but user beware. Some of the tweaks (yes, I did follow the link and have a quick browse) are really harmless and useful indeed. I am always worried about people messing with 2 things: First, the registry. Always back up the entire registry before doing anything in there. Second, the network settings. Every PC is different, and there are many variables that people don't know about for a variety of reasons.
I think it's best to do some Googling before doing much in the area of tweaking, but I am pretty cautious when it comes to this kind of thing. I have cooked more than a few systems in my time. Before you do a certain tweak, Google it and see what the general concensus is about that particular tweak. If you do this for network tweaks, you will read a 50/50 mix of success and failure for any given tweak. A failure might leave you without the net and having to call KT. Easy at home, but for some, it's a real pain in Korea due to language problems.
I was hoping that the "bought a computer" thread - which is now sinking out of sight - would gain enough worthy linkage to become a sticky. I think that would be useful here. Thunndarr...you should re-post your link in that thread and bump it up again! |

... well that probably says more about your 'understanding' than it does about anything else ... |

I find this forum to be the most polite and helpful. There will always be exceptions, but generally, I think this is a great little forum! If we could only weed out the guys who are still having pissing competitions in high school... |

In the technology forum, being polite and helpful, no? |
