I saw on the news a story about a korean teacher who slapped a first grader

A parent took a video with their cellphone and apparently it's on the web. Anyone found a copy of it?

Exactly....

The head English teach at my school "We don't use physical punishment..."

Then why do I see teacher walking around with sticks and students lined up with palms facing up.... And I suppose you could also consider the cheek pinching one of my co-teachers does when my students don't bring homework, although that doesn't bother me like the sticks do....

As much as I disagree with corporeal (corporal?) punishment...it is common here, but sometimes when it happens you gotta wonder...what set them off? I recall a video of some high-school girl or middle-school girl getting the holy bejesus smacked out of here...I wonder what were the last words to leave her mouth before that happened? I've heard some pretty vile things in my time, so it's not hard to believe some kids really push the limit. Some parents are just oblivious to the concept of structure or discipline, as performed by parents.

I used to disagree with corporal punishment, but now I don't. This is after teaching Korean kids with 0 respect and think they're invincible.

For the foreign teacher, little respect is common. For Korean teachers, in my experience, it's a different game. In my school, grade 6 kids get hit, but it's not for lack of respect.

My school's grade 6ers get whacks on their thighs and arms with a stick around test time...usually 3 or 4 times a year, for sub-par performance. They hate it and it really causes some deep-seated resentment towards the Korean teacher. It's a shame because they are generally really good kids and they really want to respect a teacher for the right reasons, not for fear.

I never approach the teacher about it myself. Maybe I am gutless, but I don't think it's my place. The kids always come to my classroom after for some sympathy and the same story that seems to always make them feel better; in Canada, teachers just can't do that. They seem to get over the whole thing really quickly, but I hate to see them so glum.

Kind of un-funny dude. Rolling Eyes

Poor kids...that teacher needs a long vacation....forced. 1st grade...what kid knows how to study hard at 7 or 8 years old?

I have never seen anything like that before in my 10 years here. Really sad.

At my school I have seen kids being punished with a quick slap on the legs or palsm with a stick or they are in the plank position or doing walking lunges round the playground.

I don't agree with corporal punishment. If you have to result to beating or screaming at children to get them to do what you want then you aren't a very good teacher.
