Is it just me or are there trees with blossoms that smell like sperm?
I walk a lot at night, and about this time of year I notice this strange phenomenon, but no one else has ever agreed....
Have you smelt them? Am I perverted!? |

Woah! You might just be messing with my head, but I did remark to a friend suddenly on the street: "Hey! It smells like sex!" I didn't realize it was a tree, she had no idea what I was talking about. |

Sperm smells?
As a long-time sperm factory I am shocked that I'm finding this out just now. |

| I'm not yet in Korea (next week) but if there are ginkgo trees there, then yes, every year about this time, they smell like sperm. I was stationed in Japan in the Navy 20 years ago and turned up this interesting phenomenon. The first year my friends and I (all sperm factories, and, shall we say, not likely to mistake the smell) were puzzled as hell and subsequently tracked it down. The tree is botanically very strange, and I'm pretty sure it's the female (I told you it was a strange plant) that makes the smell in question. Isn't nature grand? |

| I noticed this phenomenon in the Siskiyou Mountains that straddle the Oregon-California border. In summer the madrone trees (arbutus for Canadians) are in pollination mode, and the air for miles (kilometres for Canadians) smells a lot like semen. Go figure. |

| A friend of mine described this phenomenon after a trip to Jeju-do. At first I think he thought it was the smell of a lot of newly-married people having a lot of sex. In the end, I think it is chestnut trees. Further study might be required. |

I always get a kick out of this topic!
I never noticed it until a few years ago in Jeju-do. Was with the Chica and we were walking along, going towards our hotel. Suddenly the smell hit me. I didn't say anything at first, being with a lady and all, but it didn't take long for her to notice and us to start wondering what it was. I thought there was some love motel or brothel nearby where there were just hundreds of guys getting their nuts off, but after the Chica thought about it for a while, she finally remembered some story about old widowed ladies walking amongst some kind of tree to bask in the smell of jizz and remember what man smells like.
I wish I could go back to not noticing that smell. Namsan smells faintly like it from time to time, but it's thankfully not as strong as the smell down in Bundang Pie. |
