For adults?
For kids?
How long should a teaching demontration be, in general? |

Execute a middle schooler. Works wonders for discipline. |

Make it as tactile and visual as possible. Otherwise depends on the context. Is the demonstration part of a job interview? Or is it to parents of current students, to parents of prospective students, or to prospective students themselves? |

I've never actually had to do one, but I did attend one for a prospective teacher for the school I worked at.
What he was asked to do was teach a page from Interchange 3..I forget which part exactly. I'm not sure if he was given time to prepare for it or just asked to do it on the spot.
I thought his lesson was great, his explanations were clear and easy to understand. His manner was friendly and professional. I would have hired him in a second.
They didn't hire him because he was from Guam.............so they didn't consider him a ..."real native speaker". |

As part of a job interview. I want to have a few things up my sleeve, just in case.
What kinds of ice-breakers would you do for kids versus adults? |

Ella,
Didn't you say you have taught before? Just think about our "tricks'. I also think that you said that you did not want to teach young kids.
Adults or kids............what is the level? You can not do he same things for beginners that you can do with non-beginners.
I like to tellthe students on my frst day, things about me, and I ask them to tell me about them.
Wite down a short form and ask them to fill it out.
My name is ______________. I am ___years old._____. I have ___ sisters and ___ brothers. My favorite food is____. My favorite animal is___. (etc)
THen trade papers and hae them introduce eachother, This will work if they can read. FOr an adult you will make a form to, but obviously with different quesions.
Als, for an adult class you can tell them a bit about oyou, and then have them ask you a question. Or have them ask each other a question. If person a says " I play piano", you can ask person b "what does person a play?"
There are many things ou can do, but the first thing you will have toaskis what age group and what level will you be doing the lesson for. |

I prefer adults but I have no idea who I'll be working with, that's why I was asking for a range of examples. Yours is good, thank you. |

I have another idea.I use in class at times, but it can also be used for a teaching demo.
I bring in a bunch of objects. (what ever the mood grabs me) An orange, a hanger, a bobby-pin a cup....
I tell the class, "I need your help. (or what ever I say). I have to find a new use for these objects. But first lets talk about what they are."
Of you can talk about what they are first, and then say you want to find a new use....
(THe hanger) What is is? Who uses it? Wh do u use it?) etc..
One kid once told me he could hand his brother with it.
You can have a contest and have them list what they can do with the items if they are high level. Make sure you tell them that they have to be silent, and spelling does not count.
THere are so many ways you can expand this lesson. |

Just a small thought: I like certain topics.
One is jobs and workplaces for basic students.
Another one I like is, "compare A and B."
China is bigger than Japan. Math is more difficult than...
Or animals.
I would use one of these. |
