I don't think I shared this yet. About a month ago I graduated with BFA from The Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. I worked on making an interactive (more or less) game which would help me learn some Korean. The exciting part was getting the game to be dynamic so that it wouldn't be terrible difficult to modify the game into other scenarios. Since finishing it last month the game has been on hiatus until I find a better story and a cheaper programmer to work with.

the site: www.brendancoyle.com/mapojib
click on "play MAPOJIB EXPERIENCE" to play.
(requires flash player 8, it'll take a while to load (15mb))

I hope some of you may enjoy it and possibly get ideas from it. One of my idea's is to further find a way to simplify the ability to construct it so that children could use it, build a simple script with characters and a scene and have it be a tool for learning and/or sharing an experience with others.

any comments/suggestions are appreciated!

thanks

-Brendan

Cool, creative, helpful, and unique.

I'd love to see this kind of stuff for a variety of situations.

So phase two is about to start on my little project. My programmer has contacted me asking about new ideas I want to implement this time around so I thought I'd show what I had in mind as well as ask anyone else for input.

Basically I have two visions for this game. One is designing it for my own purposes, as a way to take any situation and be able to present it in this game/story way. The other interest I have would be to design it so it's easier for others to use. Some kind of background editor with visuals to easily design scenes, develop the story, and insert visuals. My question though is if any teachers could see this as beneficial if at all? I thought maybe it could turn into something people could use as final projects for kids, to take all the knowledge they've gained with language.. or with anything and create this digital story to show off what they've learned. I've been heavily influenced by dioramas which I had loved to make when I was a kid in school.

new ideas:

- design of a main screen with options
- a scene editor (making it easier for someone to change the dialogue and visual content)
- [within the scene editor] let the user "upload" images and tag them as either a character, background, or prop. These can then be used to assemble the scene.
- broad enough code design that simple visuals can be used, while still having an ability to use complex visuals in detail and characters)
- [complex visual] animation/gesture tied to words or phrases

- redundant words are blank, drag and drop from word list.
- uncovering words through interacting with the scene.

I will begin my bath and forth conversations with my programmer but hope to hear some input from a few people here who are experienced in teaching kids.

thanks!
