a friend and I intend to find work in korea in september.

I have come accross a few jobs where they require 'couples'... what exactly does this mean. We want to be in the same area so is this a possibility?

I really am desperate to get out their and teach but I do have to draw the line somewhere !!!!

Can't see why you can't reply to this job ads. I guess it's just more common for an actual couple to be job seeking together than it is for two friends and the job ads reflect this.

One thing I'd advise you to look out for is housing. They may have plans for a couple to share a studio or one bedroom apartment. Make sure you get suitable accommodation.

I would check out the couples only jobs first. Sometimes you can get a much better apartment this way. My wife and I have 3 bedrooms and an office in a newer Hyundai complex. The single teachers get screwed with a little studio and one window. Crying or Very sad If you are comming with a friend you will be spending alot of your time together anyway so go for it.

Yes it probably is just contact the hagwon, they will let you know if they specifically want a married couple or something like that. The hagwon I used to work at had two Scottish girls working there who had come to Korea together.

I think it is a good idea to come in twos for three main reasons.

First you have a long time friend with you who you can trust and someone you have known pre Korea.

Second it eliminates the worry of who is going to be my roommate? Some first time teachers have to share apartments with other teachers, this could lead to you sharing accommodation with people who have taken up teaching in Korea to run away from psychological problems, arrest in their home country (etc)

Thirdly its strength in numbers, if the hagwon knows you are close friends they may (I stress the word may) be more cautious in the way they treat you. Most hagwons can lose one teacher in a day and survive, however, they may think twice about losing two meaning it will be harder for them to take advantage of you (if its that kind of hagwon, of course, you may end up with a director who will treat you with respect regardless).

Good luck.
