Why is that in this world cup, when shown on Korean TV, England is England (not yawng-gook) but Australia is hoju?

영국 is a very inclusive term. It often refers to the whole UK. There we have 잉글랜드. |

Doggy is right. 영국 means the whole of the UK. The Chinese made that up. |

스고트랜드 - Scotland
왜일스 - Wales
잉그랜드 = England
Most people think England is the whole island, including Koreans. Whilst obviously untrue, it isn't an entirely unreasonable misconception, given England's dominance of the union (90% of the population of the UK) culturally, financially, in every way.
Mildly amusing: Yesterday, whilst out with friends and rather drunk, I ordered 호주 하나 더 주세요 from Adjuma....."one more Australia please".  |
