Has anyone ever taken their DVD players and DVD's home with them? I wanted to sell all that stuff but so far no one wants any of it and I'm wondering....is it worth taking home? Do the dvd's even work at home? I bought the dvd player brand new at Home plus (my mistake, shoulda found a cheapy at Yongsan or something).
By the way, this is not an attempt to sell it on various pages...I really am curious.

Korea is region 3. Japan I think is region 2.
To the OP: Most DVDs have region codes, keyed to the region code in the DVD player. Most Korean DVDs will be region code 3 but some are region free or region 0. Used to be most Korean DVDs were region free until Korea realized their media was becoming hot property.
A North American DVD player is region 1. There are workarounds:
- There are several web pages devoted to telling you how to switch your DVD player to region free. Many DVD players have built in "easter eggs" that can let you do that.
- You can take it to a shop and get it made into a region free player. Many asia towns in your city will probably offer this service for obvious reasons. It may not be fully legal and sure as hell will void your warranty.
- You can buy a cheap computer external DVD player, set it for region three, and then patch it thru to your TV.
- Videolan and other programs will blast through region code settings and you can just watch it on your computer. |

Yeah, I think just about every LG player has a secret code you can put into the remote control that unlocks it. Check the web sites for the player you're thinking of buying. |

Of the dvd players that you buy back home, only the big brands like Panasonic, Sony and Samsung are unchangeable.
Most of the cheap brands have a secret region code unlocking system (which will make your player region-free). When shopping for a dvd player back home, copy down model numbers and brand names. Then you use a search engine on the internet like Yahoo or Google and type in the dvd player's model number and the words region free hack. With any luck, you'll get instructions telling you how to unlock your dvd player by punching a series of numbers and commands with your dvd player remote. I know this sounds like fiction, but it's not. I've done it. It works. The dvd player I have at home is a Koss. |

Depends on the Zone of the DVD and on what type of DVD player you have back home.
To be sure buy a multi-zone DVD player (more expensive) and you are set. |

If you make your DVD player region free, however, do be aware that it usually voids any warranty you may have...
Also, these days the DVD corporations are growing increasingly aware of region free DVD players and are developing DVD's that won't work in a region free player. At this point, though, I think that's pretty rare...

And by the way, if you ask me, it's a clear cut example of disguting corporate greed.
You bought the movie in China/Korea/wherever, but when you go home you have to buy it again because the companies don't want to risk having a movie be seen where it hasn't been officially released yet. It sickens me to no end, and makes me wish either:
A. The people responsible die a nasty death and their families face a curse for generations
OR
B. I find a way to exploit the system like that and make millions too |
