Has anyone ever had a problem with the airlines by trying to use this type of carrier?

I purchased one in Chungmuro yesterday and I asked the lady three times if it's ok to take on the airplane and everytime she said yes/ok.

The reason I purchased this type is obvious: storage in my Korean apartment when I come back.

So I surfed the net a bit and found conflicting reports: some websites say they are not accpeted and some say it's ok.

Any ideas?

Personally I wouldn't use it just because baggage CAN shift around in the baggage hold and I wouldn't want to risk something knocking into it and collapsing it. If you know what airline you'll be using, call them and ask them.

My concerns would be that it's collapsable. How sturdy is it?
Also, how will you attach a water bottle or provide water securely inside?
Other than that it looks okay.

I think with the doors closed it's unlikely that the cage will fold. The thing I'd be concerned about is that most airlines require a kind of bumper that runs around the outside girth of the kennel in order to ensure adequate ventillation if boxes are stacked next to it. Also it's hard to make out in the picture what kind of floor your kennel has but I think that KAL (at least) requires a non-porous floor. The floor in our dog's kennel is concave with a depression running all the way around the perimeter (useful in case of an accident). Again, it's best to ask for specific requirements from your airline but these are a couple of points you might consider.

Thanks for the thought about the bumper on the outside. I think it'll be okay because of the design. It's square on the bottom and it forms a bit of a triangle at the top. I am planning to get those absorbant pads to put in the bottom of the cage.

Anyone have any idea where I can buy the 'spillproof' water cups in Seoul? I am tempted to try my Indy on those bottle water dispensers to see if he can get the water out.

We have flown our dog twice and they are very strict about the kennel. Not to rain on your parade, but all the airlines we have checked require the plastic kind with ventilation holes on 3 sides an a door on the fourth. The top does unscrew so it is kind of collapsible. (It unscrews around the middle "bumper" area so you can stack the top inside the bottom.) Whatever you decide to use, put the dogs bed in it a couple of weeks before the trip so the dog can get used to it and feel at home in the kennel. Also, the shots need to be at least a month old to get into korea, and I would expect the same about getting the dog to your home country. Also, most of the airlines have temperature restrictions, so you may not be able to fly your dog during the summer. We have a pug and she is forbidden to fly from June-August.

I am aware of everything you have mentioned, however, it might be useful for other people planning to fly with their dogs.

Short nosed dogs are not allowed to fly during the hot weather because their are prone to respitory distress and heart trouble. (I read it somewhere).

As for my kennel...it has ventilation on all sides. No problem there.

Indy got his shots and he was 'fixed' when I first got him back in March. I knew I was going to be flying to Canada this summer so I made sure everything was in order way in advance.

The ice idea is really good...we were wondering about how we could easily and reliably provide water for our dog on the trip to Canada this summer. Thanks for the tip.

Have you actually checked with your airline to be sure that you can fly your dog cargo during the summer? Every airline I checked with that flies to the States has it in writing that they do not allow dogs to fly cargo during the summer months.

Oh, and as for ice, by the time you get to the airport, check in, and wait for the flight, the ice will have melted. A lot of dogs won't drink when under stress anyway.

Yes, we've been given permission to take our dog on both legs of the return trip flight. Our dog is included in our reservation and each step along the way from booking to paying for our tickets I've checked and rechecked his reservation. When we originally booked the flight I had to wait several days for permission from KAL to bring him but once it was given it was attached to our reservation and the details have been available to everyone we've dealt with.

Ah, I just realized that it probably has a lot to do with the destination. I'm flying somewhere hot.
