i've just arrived in vancouver and in the past day i've seen about 3 light aircraft, like 1-prop cessna style things.
in korea i've never seen one. i just think that's weird.
is light aircraft even a phenomenon in korea? like, for people who live around incheon/gimpo especially - do you see any? float planes? |

General aviation as we know it does NOT exist in Korea for a number of reasons. Ultralights are slowing coming onto the scene now but it will be a few years before you see anything like a 172 for private, recreational use. |

A few weeks ago I saw about 7 old bi-planes circling Gangneung. For a moment I though North Korea was attacking . There are also a bunch of guys who fly around with parachutes and big gas powered fans on their backs out here every weekend (even in the winter). But mostly it's just fighter jets. |

General aviation in Asia is like General aviation in Europe; it's only for the rich. North America is a different story, though.
To the best of my knowledge, there is only 1 C172 available for rent in Korea, and it was over 300,000 won per hour if memory serves correct.
I'm not sure if that was a wet or a dry rate.
If it's dry, add another large chunk of change for the fuel.
Look on the brightside: You've seen how Koreans drive, do you really want them flying over your house? |

Are you kidding? Skydiving is akin to falling past a hundred highspeed fans. That'd be a friggin' nightmare. |

I'm no expert, but I would imagine that being so close to the most heavily fortified military border in the world might have something to do with the lack of private flying here.
15 minutes in the wrong direction from Gimpo would probably put you in NK airspace. |

| There's a flying club in Yang Yang. That's the only one I know of in the Seoul area (well, the nearest area to Seoul). Some KAL pilots I know of fly recreationally, and I've heard of one guy that bought one of those kits and made his own ultralight, but then he sold it. |

| When I was in Suwon I would always see or hear small planes flying overhead. Of course, they were American jets. Probably not a safe bunch to share the sky with. |

| If you drive from Seoul to Guri using the Olympic expressway, you will see on the side of the river a landingstrip for smaller planes |

So you are equating American jets in the sky to Korea`s lack of recreational aircraft. With people like you, 2 + 2 equals idiot. |

Yeah, military airspace and all that. If they have recreational aircraft, it's not around Suwon.
Between the North Korean border and the American tradition of friendly fire, I wouldn't want to go up there. |
