Kindergarten and middle school kids are by far the most challenging ages to teach in my opinion. Does that mean we should hate it? No. Teaching each set has its own rewards. If you are hating it, I would suggest asking yourself a few questions as to why. Ask yourself what is working and what isn't. Find teachers who have made it work for them, ask them questions, learn from them. As adults we should all be able to surmount the challenges our students present us. Be prepared to be creative, put thought into things and take the time to find out about, and really care about what it is you need to do to turn these classes around. You'll develop as a teacher, you'll be happier and, of course, so will the students. |

I'm sure you know where I stand on this one. Middle school's great; high school's even better; kindy is horrid.
Put me down as one towards the Bucheonleon hypothesis. |

I'll take kindy / elementary anyday. Yes, it does take a special person to deal with little ones. They are NOT small versions of big kids. They are full of energy and affection, just like a little puppy.
You have to be prepared to get down to their level, sing, dance, play, get your hands dirty in the paint and glue. Learning for them is HANDS-ON. TPR (total physical response) is NOT just a catch phrase. Developing hand/eye co-ordination, learning to read, write, and speak (in both languages) is their life. Play is how they put it into place.
For the record, I taught at the collegiate level back home, I have taught at a uni here and switched to kids by personal choice. I was also and I am still involved with things like scouts, RCY, etc. I also did more than 2 years volunteer work at an orphanage. That is why I switched to little kids from the big (uni) ones.
I'll leave the teaching of the old kids to the young teachers. I get boundless energy from my little ones and don't plan to go back to big kids anytime soon. |

My preference is for high school and older. I do enjoy Grade 3 middle school and selected individuals in Grade 2. I really don't like Grade 1 middle school. Even younger...yuck.
The younger they are, the more alien I think they are.
My hat is off to anyone who can teach the younger kids. Some people can relate. I can't. |

I second that emotion~
I think of my own behavior back in kindy, then middle school, then high school, and any teacher would've preferred to teach me in h.s. than any other stage. See below:
kindy: Head in the clouds. Never paid attention. Frustrated the teacher to no end. Painfully shy and never, ever participated.
Middle school: Friends and I deliberately effed with certain teachers. I had slight discipline problems, and not the best attitude toward authority.
high school: Model student. Did homework religiously and always raised hand in class, verging on nerdiness...
Yep, by h.s., I had it together, and teachers loved me. They hated me before that... |

A few posts back, I finally saw the word I'd been looking for all along: aptitude.
Some people are just natural fits for little kids. They have the caring, playful, parent-like thing down, naturally.
I am simply not one of those people, so kindergarten will always and forever be a bad option for me. I've worked with little kids before. I'm bad at it.
On the other hand, many who are naturals with little kids find themselves bad at earning true respect from older kids. I'm a natural there, as I'm relaxed enough, cool enough (to kids anyways), and have tons of interesting new things to teach them... that I get along SO well with middle schoolers.
I'd be curious sometime to know... lots of teachers complain about their middle schoolers being dead silent. I wonder how many of those are the same people who love the little tykes?
Simply different aptitudes. |
In other words, there is an inverse correlation between kindergarten and middle school.
So according to the hypothesis, there should be few respondents for the first and last options and many respondents for the second and third options.
At the time of this message, the tally for the four options was 4, 5, 7, and 1, respectively, but now that we are adapting for Uncle Alex, that changes it to 4, 6, 7, and 1.
That gives us a chi square of 4.21948052.
That changes the level of significance from .10 to .05.
Thanks, Uncle Alex!
In case you're wondering what I'm talking about, I got these figures from:

I prefer middle school kids because of the kind of activities I can do with
them. Also, I hate crawling under tables trying to catch the elusive chubby
little brat who deserves a good whopping. Behaviour management isn't
nearly as stressful with the middle school kids as it is with the lil kiddies in
my experience. |

After I taught kindergarten for one year, I said I would never do it again. And I haven't.
Now I have taught middle school for one year, and I tell you now: I will never do it again. And I won't.
I taught high school for three years and it was the most rewarding job I have ever had. I will do it again; for a very long time.
But that's just me. |
