So I have an F-4 visa, and have read that I am legally allowed to teach private English lessons.

Does anyone know if this is true? Does anyone know of a site that would verify or falsify this information?

Thanks so much for your help!

With an F-4 visa, you can work anywhere a Korean can work. Koreans can not legally teach privates....how can you?

Can you legally rip of the government by not paying taxes back home?
The only thing you can do is get a tutors licence.

And then.. you can teach privates.

Privates are not illegal for everyone. Students can teach up to 20 hours a week to help with thier expenses.

Actually, I think the answer is "Yes," with the condition that you pay taxes for all earnings. When I became interested in tutoring three years ago, I went to the Mok-dong Immigration Office to ask the same question. The employee there told me that in terms of work, I could pretty much do whatever I wanted as long as it wasn't something like "working in a host bar." I must have made a very weird impression for her to say that...

Anyhow, I went to an agency that connected tutors to students (they actually advertised for F-4 holders specifically, as I recall), started tutoring, got paid through the agency with all the taxes taken out. It was all very official and perfectly legal, as far as I know.

If you are registered with the local Dept. oof Education and tax dept. , you can teach privates like any other Korean or F-5 holder.

CGroch, the agency that I worked with no longer exists (I think the partners decided to go separate ways). But there was another agency that I know of called IBS. They seemed pretty cool when I interviewed with them a few years ago. I'm sorry, but I don't remember their contact information.

Meanwhile, you might want to keep an eye out on ads posted on Worknplay.co.kr and Englishspectrum.com. Good luck!
