Hello,
I am helping my school principal redesign the current contract at our school.
At the moment, the pay is 2.0 million won/month, including a W100,000 bonus and all of the typical goodies (apartment, flight, pension, health, etc.)
We live near Bundang and teach kindi from 10 until 2 with an hour and ten minute break for lunch, then junior classes not exceeding 120 hours a month.
What do you think the average pay for this type of job is? I'm hearing 2.2 to start is average now?
What would you expect/negotiate for in your second year, third year, etc. of re-signing? When you re-sign, are you still entitled to the severance pay from the first contract?
Thanks for your honest input! |

You are always entitled to your severance pay. It is required by law.(article 34 of the labor standards act). You are entitled to one months salary for each year worked. It is calculated as the average of the last 3 months pay.
In any government (read public school) job you get an average salary increase of 100k per month for every year worked. If they hope to compete with the public schools to get teachers then they will have to offer pay and benefits that are at least similar.
A public school teacher gets on average 2.0-2.2 for 88-92 x 40 minute classes per month (far less than the hakwon 120).
A level 3 (lowest level - bachelors degree and no experience) teacher in the public system who is working 120 classes (like a hakwon teacher) will earn a monthly salary (1.8 million base + 20k per class over 92) of 2.36 million + housing + airfare + 300k settlement allowance + medical + pension + severance.
A level 2 teacher @ 120 classes (40 minutes) will earn (before deductions) 2.56 mil.
A level 3 teacher @ 120 classes (40 minutes) will earn (before deductions) 2.76 mil.
Hakwons who don't pay into medical, pension, and expect upwards of 140 or more 40 minute classes per month deserve to be without their foreign teachers.
