So this morning I get asked 'do you have any plan for tomorrow'. No, I don't; it's exam week and I'm just going to be sitting on my ass like today and yesterday.

'Let's go to immigration tomorrow [to renew my contract]'.

Wait a minute, I haven't even seen the final contract. All I was given was a copy of last year's contract with the dates changed and the wording completely wrong for a renewing teacher. This is the school district's fault, not my clueless school's.

I'm one of only three high school teachers in my school district who wants to renew and I can't believe how eager my school district is to shoot itself in the foot. I love my school, and they've been great to me; but I really feel sometimes like writing an explanation of everything I've seen done wrong, get my k-friend to translate it, and then distribute it all over the school district to show how they've shot themselves in the foot and then go get another job.

Bhali Bhali style contract renewal. Very Happy Well, if you're school has been pretty fair with you, why don't you renew? Push them for a raise first. It never hurts to ask.

Yeah, it's not the school I have a problem with, but the school district. Out of nine FTs they hired to teach high school last year only three that I know of are renewing, and now it seems they're going for a 100% turnover rate. The three of us who are staying are definitely gong to push for a raise, but so far it seems they just want me to sign the same contract I did last year (with a free flight to Korea and W300,000 settlement allowance for the 'new teacher').

I'm sure Ya-ta-boy can confirm what a nuissance it is dealing through the one school district representative who can speak English, who has to deal through her superiors to get anything done and is the messanger afraid of being shot.

So it's not just GEPIK/EPIK after all? Public school jobs used to be cherry; these days they seem to be becoming more and more like hogwon gigs (subject to the myriad slings and arrows of outrageous mis-managing). From what I've read on this board, most uni jobs aren't so hot now either.

Yeah it's sadly almost inevitable the path my school district's been taking. They want to take away schools' autonomy over their FTs in the cases where things have really worked out well and then, at the same time, are not the least bit receptive to teachers who have been having troubles with their schools. From my point of view it's just so obvious what to do to attract and then retain experienced teachers, but try pounding that into the head of any Korean government official.

In fact, there is something nefarious going on with the school district. When it's all over and they can't screw me anymore, I'll divulge.

According to another FT in the district, there is to be no raise at all. Exactly the same contract as last year. Just one more good reason for me to get my hinney out of here.

I had one place wait until 4 days before the end of the contract.

Imagine their surprise. Shocked

It seems now that they want to have our meeting tomorrow and renew the contract ... tomorrow afternoon? Next week? What a clusterfuck they're making for themselves.
