I see on another website a posting for a national uni job where they ask for a 'security clearance' from your home country's law enforcement agency proving that you have never been convicted of a crime.

Does anyone know how tight they are about this? Is this any crime? Im no sex criminal, but I do have a pinchy-little record. What do you know about it??

It would be logical to assume that any sort of criminal record will drastically lower your chances of getting a university job.

It is only logical.

But you must keep in mind that in Korea, a traffic violation is a criminal offense.

The way Koreans view the law is completely different to the way we view the law.

My father is officially banned from Ontario for reckless driving.

Of course it is... you would have to be criminally stupid and do something really bad to be pulled over by one of these dumb bullhorn cops they have. If a cop barks something at me on the bullhorn, I just ignore it like I never heard it. I wouldn't understand it if I did, anyway.

I had to get one of these before I went to work as a teacher in England. It's basically just a letter saying that you don't have a criminal record. Speeding violations don't count - that's your driving record (of course, DUIs will be on there).

They check any letters you might bring with you about minor criminal offenses with a lawyer and the police. The ring the respective embassies as well to have them verify what they can. Sometimes they use magnifying glasses to check for forged documents.

There have been too many paedophiles coming in of late

Ok, I got the word on my situation from the native speaker doing the hiring for the national univertsity in question.

I was frank with him, told him all the "Blah, blahs", i.e., that I had some priors, all drug and alcohol related, no sex crimes, been sober 5 years now (blah, blah).

He was frank and told me it may be a waste of my time to apply to any national uni, as they all require a security check. And as soon as an employee is found to have ANY criminal record ( my assumption is that traffic violations aren't 'criminal'), he/ she is fired.

Just passing on what I was told.
