Apparently on July 6-7 there is a English Village camp situation being hosted by Gyenoggi-Do. Apparently all the GEPIK elementary teachers are being requested to attend and staff this camp. Half on one day and half on the other. I was told I had to attend on July 6 by my co-workers and sell shirts to students attending this camp. Anybody else hear about this?

Maybe they'll have a "Kiss the Foreigner" contest too...

Seriously, selling shirts? Next thing you know they're going to have you selling hotdogs at baseball games...

No! Seriously, if you go to teach, up to you. But to sell t-shirts. Tell them to stuff it. We may not all have BEds or PGCEs (some do), but we are still professionals and most of us consider ourselves teachers. PLEASE, anyone who is asked to do this, tell them to stuff it. If you feel really bold, blow up at them. This is an insult to all public school teachers (even us ones outside of GEPIK and EPIK). Selling t-shirts, this is a new low.

I am going to the stupid thing next Thursday. We are going to be there from about 1:45PM to 3:00PM. I am so excited to drive for an hour and a half to be there for an hour and fifteen minutes. Pure stupidness.

Yeah, I'm going on Wednesday. I am also taking my "special class" kids with me in my car. My co-teacher is taking the others in her car. The way I see it, it's during my regular class time - like a substitute for a regular class for me. I have no problem doing it. My school always goes out of their way to help me (according to Korean standards), so I am willing to sacrifice for this minor inconvenience. However, I have a good school and principal. If you situation is not so good, I can understand your hesitation.

Peace

Well as Mr. seoulunitarian said, this is during regular class time. And it is mandatory, all GEPIK elementary teachers have to go (at least that's what I was told by my co-workers).

See it's an English village type deal and I have to play the part of a shopkeeper. The kids come in with "tickets" and I take the tickets and give them the shirts. And all conversation must be in English.

If this had been on a weekend or outside of class hours I would have told them that I wasn't attending. But since it takes place within my assigned class hours, I might as well be there as at my school.

However I was able to get some "compensation" for this in the form of extra paid leave so...you lose some you win some.

As for Mr. Seoulunitarian, my situation is pretty good. But Mr. laogaiguk does have a point. Bottom line were it not for the paid leave I would have probably kicked up a fuss.

Agreed. I am being paid overtime, and discussions are in progress for reimbursement of gas money. By the way, I'll be operating the bank~

There might be a few million people in North Korea that disagree with you. There also might be thousands of people in South Korea that disagree with you.

i would just say, if you dont want to go, accidentally get lost on the way. the odds are they will give you directions in korean...

last year we had a stupid meeting in suwon, i live 2 hours from there, the meeting started at 2, and was supposed to end at 6, the last bus to my town was at 6 as well, they gave me a sheet saying where to go that was written in korean. well, i just couldnt get the taxi driver to find the place, so i couldnt go... so sad.

someone else said this, really, what can they do? and if you do go, pocket a few shirts for your trouble...

Ok, maybe someone can help me in terms of answering a question...

I'm not exactly sure if I'm in GEPIK or not. I haven't heard about this, so now I'm thinking I'm not in that program.

I started teaching elementry school in Incheon which is in Gyeonggi-do last month.

Most of the teacher's I've heard talking about GEPIK were from the Northern areas of Gyeonggi-do.

So far, I've heard about an English Festival in the second week of July, but that's it.
