Can anyone point me in the right direction of some clubs that play any kind of guitar music, as opposed to your traditional dancey nightclubs. I gather Hongdae is my best bet, and have heard the likes of Freebird, Skunk Hell, and Club Spot mentioned with regards to this in the past.
Any information on these places, and of course, any others, would be greatly appreciated. Also, and this is a long-shot, if there happens to be a place that fits the bill in Ilsan, that would be superb.
Anyway, cheers for your input folks. And before anyone gets pedantic about which specific kind of "guitar music", I mean absolutely anything. It's all preferable to traditional dance music, for me at least. Oh, and the cheaper and nastier the better. |

Skunk Hell is specifically for punk music. We don't have any tolerance for foreigners who show up just to laugh at Koreans, so be forewarned most Dave's posters.
Club Spot puts on a variety of stuff from emo to metal. Another place you might like is Drug, where you can see Rock Tiger, a kind of overblown rockabilly band.
I've been to Freebird a few times and there's never a crowd. Plus the owner seems like a knob. |

Cheers Racetraitor, having read this board for ages and rarely posting, I had a feeling it might be yourself to answer this topic.
A friend told me that also, that Skunk Hell is basically all punk. It's not my favourite genre, but I still enjoy it, and live gigs are ultimately what I'm looking for. Why would people go there to laugh? Punk clubs are bloody everywhere in the "Western" world. If they do, then clearly they are twats.
The Freebird experience sounds like hell. Fantastic use of the word "knob" there, made me chuckle at 7am anyway. I should have known......the only recommendation for that place came from an aging Korean rocker in a drunken stupor.
On a similar note, does a decent website exist for Korean gigs? I'd be interested in checking out Vassline, for example, before this Pentaport festival thing. |

That's the problem. Korean punk bands seem to have no endurance. They take a 5 minute break after each 2 minute song that they sing and stand around and talk to the audience. What's with that syi!t! I didn't come here to listen to some guy's 2 cents. I wanna dance. I didn't laugh, but I can see why some westerners do. They're not very hardcore musicians. They do play well though. |

I'd have to say the most energetic bands play in Skunk Hell, so if it's live performances you want, that might be the place. The sound system there sucks christ, and the layout of the stage is irritating.
Foreigners come to Skunk shows to make fun of Korean punks for a variety of reasons. Some of them hate punks back in their home countries. Some think Koreans can't possibly be punk because they're not white. And yes, quite a few don't like the breaks between songs. Probably the one that's caused the most problem has been foreigners who come there to pick up girls, and don't realise that most of the girls they talk to already have boyfriends. I remember some German loser trying to hit on my girlfriend when I was standing right next to her once.
At one show dedicated to peace last year, we had a bunch of soldiers show up, and while one band was talking about something political between sets, they'd be shouting "Play some farking music!"
Vassline is a great live band and they play in a lot of different venues. There are a whole bunch of similar bands that are in that crowd, such as 49 Morphines and Samchung. A good place to see them play is Ssamzie Space.
FF is a decent club too, but I don't like Spot because I went there to watch a World Cup game and they changed the channel for some reason.
Here's the closest thing to a decent calendar we have. July looks empty right now.

Yes, Pulgasari is the band that was being heckled by GIs actually. Nevin, the guitarist, is a good friend of mine. He's in China now where the punk scene is huge, and he's in at least a couple bands. |

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions......I've compiled a mental list of places to stumble between this weekend.
On that note, does anyone know of anything in particular gig-wise, or indie/rock/punk/metal nights happening on Friday night? I know there's the 'sticky' music thread, but it seems to be a bit lacking, to say the least.
Only been to Hongdae during the day thus far, looking forward to getting smashed and having a good first night out there.
Cheers again. |

The only show I know about is at the Spot at 11pm. If you like hardcore, 13 Steps and Today X Spot are playing. If you like godawful pop-punk or ska-core, Lazybone is playing too. |
