| Since this seems to be a hot topic of discussion here, I thought a poll might be appropriate. |

| Was asked to pay a deposit once in the last 3 contracts.....I refused and cited why it was illegal for them to take the money from my cheque. The labour board backed me up and no deposit was taken.(public school job with GEPIK) |

I do not buy the argument that the school gets stuck with the bill and that's reason for a "security deposit".
It is usually the next teacher who gets stuck with the bill, not the school.
More than once I have been stuck with massive bills that were leftovers from the previous teacher. (another reason to avoid shared housing ) I have no way to verify this other than the folowing bills were regularly half or less than the first month. I had to pay it, or have the service cut off.
So, if you are going do a runner, at least realize who will be stuck with the bills you leave behind.
I always pay my bills myself. It's easy to do at the bank and then there are no problems.
The only possible reason I can see for having these is to reimburse losses for airfare from runners.
Even if you were to leave a job before your year is up, as long as all your bills are paid and there are no damages to your apartment .........you still should get your security deposit back.

Never paid a security deposit, well, not exactly ture...had a hundred deducted from my check for last months phone, but I got what was mine back.
On a related topic...Is key money considered deposit money? I mean, are they gonna try to take money to paint my place or something out of my key money when I leave? |

Yes, I paid it in my first contract, and I did get it back.
I'd never sign a contract that had it again.
Fortunately, I no longer need to as I have my own apartment and collect a housing allowance instead of school-provided housing.
It really does cut out a lot of nonsense. |

Well, it seems I was wrong...according to the poll anyway, most people who paid security deposits are getting them back.
