I have a few questions about lesson plans.

How in-depth are they? For instance, do you just write a couple of paragraphs or a couple of pages for each day of class?

How long does it take to write up one day's worth? I keep hearing about teachers who have to go to school 2 hours before classes start. Are lesson plans that long?

Thanks!

Each school will have different requirements. I've never worked at a school that requires I hand in a lesson plan, but I always make them. There have been threads about lesson plans before. You might want to try a search and read about what other people have said. It seems to me that a lot of people said they spend around an hour planning each lesson. I know that is about the amount of time I spend writing one, on average. It depends on what kind of lesson it is, of course. I include an estimate of the amount of time I want to spend on each activity.

Many schools have their own text book, so teachers don't have to spend more than 5 minutes on a plan.

My current hakwon requires that I do lesson plans, but I think it's a good idea. At my previous hakwons I never had to do any, and I have found that my teaching has improved a lot with the plans.

When I first started writing the leson plans, they took me maybe 30 minutes or longer for each plan, but now some only take me 5 or 10 minutes and others take 10-15 depending upon the books I use.

I try to do about 1 page for each lesson and break it down into introduction, activities (descriptions about how to do them) and homework. I also note down approximate times for each section of the class so I can get everything done.

The more you do the faster you will become at it.

It helps a lot to make up a blank form or template for your lesson plan, then fill in the blanks (on the computer or by hand.) If you're not experienced in writing lesson plans, you can find some ideas online:

http://education.uoit.ca/EN/main/13739/25744/forms_lessonplans.php

(I have been at schools where I had to have lesson plans. That doesn't mean I follow them to a T!)
