ITALY HAS THE World Cup, but make no mistake about it: The United States rules the soccer world.

And you have to know just about everyone east, west and south of our borders yes, probably even a few traditionalists in Rome absolutely hate it, covering their eyes in disbelief over how Sunday's grand finale went down.

For 106 minutes, men's soccer on its highest stage was what it is: a "beautiful game" to about a billion people, a boring exhibition to a couple million. But then the American dream came true.

The World Cup had a good ol' USA-style finish. It was the greatest moment in our soccer's history.

First off, a sport designed to be played without a scoreboard (most poor countries can't afford them) allowed instant replay to eject the greatest player on the field, French star Zinedine Zidane.

Make no mistake about it: His head butt a classless act many Americans consider typical of soccer players wasn't seen by any referee until after a replay was shown on the stadium scoreboard. After that, miraculously, Zidane was red-carded.

Then, 14 minutes later, the end-to-end "action" was halted because, well, Americans like instant gratification. For crying out loud, Tiger Woods was making a charge in the Western Open. Endless meaningless soccer no goals had been scored for almost 102 minutes after a rapid-fire, 1-1 start had to end.

Alas, another American innovation a penalty-kick shootout was called upon to determine the winner. And, rightfully, the good guys (not the one with the Dennis Rodman impersonator) prevailed.

Instant replay and a shootout on soccer's greatest day. Embarrassingly refreshing for any American viewer.

And then the topper: When Marco Materazzi took off his red, white and green clown hat and placed it over the coveted Jules Rimet Trophy, the word "Italy" appeared on the front.

Not the Italian "Italia," mind you. Rather, the English version.

Ah, the perfect ending.

After hearing so many people on this board complain about Koreans' attitudes toward soccer, it's refreshing to see that Americans are also petty and have incredible inferiority complexes.

Yaya doesn't represent all Americans, of course.

I vehemently dislike the Italians!

Worst World Cup ever!
