Hiya!
I'd like to take a little getaway and enjoy the last of the summer. My Korean buddy tells me that the East Sea is cleaner and more beautiful than the west coast, so I'd like to head out there.

I've done a little research on recommended sites, but I fear that the most well-known places will be crammed with people, and hard to enjoy.

Do you know any nice spots along the east coast (more northerly would be closer for me) that aren't too busy? Thanks heaps!

The south coast is best of all.
Get over the psychological barrier of thinking it's so much farther.
It's an extra hour and a half by express bus.
Comfy express nonstop (except for a highway pitstop) buses leave TWICE every hour from Nambu bus terminal headed for "Sangju" beach on Namhae Island (the third largest island in Korea, connected by bridge). No transfers, no other time wasters, straight there POW.

You will NOT regret going to Sangju.

(You can get up an hour or two after dawn, grab the bus and be at Sangju by noon or one, stay overnight and return Sunday afternoon, getting back to your place before dark. I've done it in reverse, going from here to Seoul, many times, and it isn't such a big deal.)

But if you want to go to the northeast, then avoid Gyeongpodae and Hwaijinpo because they are very crowded with Seoulites seeking a getaway.

Thanks so much, Van!
This South Coast option is intriguing. I looked up Yeosu as well, and though it's a bit further, an overnight "deluxe" bus might be fun.

There isn't much online re: Sanju/Namhae. Is it easy to find a beach/hotel from the bus station?

It's "Sangju" beach! (not sanju, and make sure you get on a bus headed to Namhae, not sangju-city in GyeongsangBUKdo) and yeah, easy as pie to find accommodation. A new motel has opened up even though I myself never have trouble getting a room, though I sometimes have opted for the 10,000 won tents near the beach set up by a longterm entrepreneur (has been there for four summers at least).

Near Sangju beach is a nice mountain to hike and even stream to temple to see if you're so inclined.

Bridge to the island:

Sangju beach is on a bay with islets at the mouth breaking the waves creating a warm lagoon effect:
