in ethnic Koreans from other countries.

From the Korea Herald (of course):

5,000 Korean-Americans invited

The Education Ministry announced yesterday that it will invite around 5,000 Korean-Americans to visit Korea within the next five years.
"Korean-Americans run into many barriers during their lifetime and the search for their identity is one of the biggest issues," said Jun Woo-hong, director of the overseas Korean education division at the Education Ministry.

"Korean-Americans don't have many opportunities to understand Korea and to find their true identity. This was arranged to provide that opportunity," he added.

This year, a total of 945 high school and college students from 29 different countries received invitations to experience their motherland.

The first two groups to visit this summer will learn about Korea and its culture by touring historic sites and economic industries and attending a variety of cultural events.

The first group, which consists of 511 high school students from Russia, China, Japan and the Commonwealth of Independent States, arrived yesterday. The second group of 434 college students comes in August.

Those who have never set foot in Korea were given priority, with recommendations from Korean embassies located in the 29 countries also considered, said Jeon Jong-bo, senior education researcher at the National Institute for International Education Development. The institute was responsible for selecting the participants.

"Most of the participants are third and fourth generations who look similar to us but think differently," Jun said. "That's why we have to push and encourage them to know our culture so that we can stir up patriotism in them. We have to acknowledge that Korean-Americans are valuable resources to us."

Stir up patriotism..

I wonder how many of the Korean-Americans would rather spend the rest of their life in Korea than the US. Maybe... 4?

Seems to be a good enough reason for about, um, well, let's see. 19,223 Koreans became American citizens last year (604,280 naturalized citizens total). 26,562 Koreans received permanent resident status (1,122,373 people total). The statistics for Canadians fleeing to America are similar.

Anywho... facts are l@m3

Greed? South Korea is just as bad as the U.S.

Christ, you just need to look around you in this country to see that. Plus you really need to visit America before making ignorant azz comments like that.

If you were Korean? Are you saying you aren't. I beg to differ based on that last sentence of yours. Why don't you go back to your Korean America-bashing websites?

They're probably a Nork...haven't been to SK or the US.

It seems like Kyopos might find it hard to trade American culture for what could be a repressive and much more authoritarian culture of Korea.

I don't even know where to start. First you say that SK is the same as the US and you can see it by looking around. Well, so both are really bad (are you agreeing with Worldwide but saying Korea is too)?
But then you say that is an ignorant azz comment, but you just said the US is like Korea and that it is full of greed. And you just said the same thing about Korea that Worldwide did about the US.

I think you just worded things very badly here. Wink

I'm not sure how this article led to a discussion on greed, but I was struck more by the implications of the last paragraph:

"Most of the participants are third and fourth generations who look similar to us but think differently," Jun said. "That's why we have to push and encourage them to know our culture so that we can stir up patriotism in them. We have to acknowledge that Korean-Americans are valuable resources to us."

It seems to imply that anyone who is ethnically Korea, must also be made to think like a South Korean because they "think differently." Also, they must be made to feel "patriotism" toward a country far away and of which they are not citizens simply because of their ethnicity. Just strike me as odd.

Also, I noticed the title of the story was, "5,000 Korean-Americans invited " and then a few paragraphs down they talk about who is coming to visit and none of them is Korean-American.

Uhhhhhhh...how about the fact that 19 of the top 20 universities in the world are found on US soil?

The greed you speak of also provides the most opportunity for personal economic growth in the history of the world.

Cultureless? If you mean to say that the US doesn't really have a unique or ancient culture to call its own, then you're right. We just managed to incorporate the some of the best aspects from nearly every world culture into an amalgam that has launched us to the stratosphere of world domination.

Did you get turned down for a visa, or get dumped by an American girlfriend? Or seriously, did we bomb your village? You have yet to answer that question. I'm really curious.

If ou're praying for the downfall of America, don't hold your breath. It will happen eventually, but not in our lifetime.
