It is for a lack of better words crunch time. If an E-2 is not aquired prior to the start date, is it unorthidoxed for a school to send their new teacher on a Visa run upon arrival?

Seems rather expensive to foot the bill for airfare and then turn around to foot the bill for a trip to Japan. I have however been hired in Busan, decreasing the distance to Japan.

That's a new one one me: is this related to the noun "doxy"? If so, I'd love to hear the rest of the tale .... pray tell!

Dictionary.com can do wonders, eh? Thanks for the spelling correction. Rolling Eyes

If a spelling error how can some be "(un)orthodoxed"? (Un)Orthodox is an adjective. Now doxy is a far more interesting word. You don't know that word?

Well dictionary.com has no dictionary entry for doxy but the Compact Oxford shows:-

doxy

noun (pl. doxies) archaic 1 a lover or mistress. 2 a prostitute.

So, I repeat, pray tell the tale!

Hehe, so that's how the rumours start of foreign teachers getting up to mischief. Visa runs and prostitutes, I'd also love to hear the tale, but sadly in this case it seems it's all due to a 'spelling' error.

Well, if you're already in Korea, it's normal to send you to Japan for a visa run.

To fly you here from let's say Canada and then send you on a run to Japan is really not very economical. It's also rather stupid to sign a contract overseas unless you have no cash.

It's not that unusual. It happens when a school really wants a teacher ASAP. To go through the visa application process in your home country can take a few weeks, in Korea they can do it in one day if the right 'lubricant' is applied to speed the process.

They'll probably want you to work illegally for a week or two before you go to Japan. Lots of people will tell you not to do that. The risk is pretty small though. None the less, it is still a risk.

I wouldn't worry about it. But I'm not a worrier. If you're the kind of person who's worried about missile tests in North Korea right now then you should probably be worried about this too.
