I'm flabbergasted. A friend of mine applied to teach at a GEPIK elementary school and was offered 1.8 million (non-negotiable.) Couldn't believe it. |

Level 3, basic requirements (native speaker / bachelors degree) and NO EXPERIENCE. 1.8 mil. + benefits.
Remember that this is for only 22 x 40 minute classes (hakwons make you work 30 x 50 minute classes for 2 mil as a newbie.)
Where is the surprise there?
Add in the additional income from doing the afterschool program (20k won per 40 minute class) and you can make better coin than at a hakwan for still less time and you are home by 5:00.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 1 - must have:
◎ A Teacher's Certificate for elementary or secondary school with at least two years of full-time teaching experience at accredited institutions .
◎ An English education certificate as TESOL/TEFL comprised of a minimum of 100 course hours with at least two years of full-time teaching experience at accredited institutions.
◎ A Master's degree with at least two years of full-time teaching experience at accredited institutions
Level 2 - must have:
◎ A Teacher's certificate for elementary or secondary school
◎ An English education certificate as TESOL/TEFL comprised of a minimum of 100 course hours with a Master's degree
◎ A Bachelor's degree with at least one year of full-time English teaching experience at accredited institutions
Level 3 - must have:
◎ A Bachelor's degree
------------------------------------------------------------------
Starting salaries:
2,300,000 won per month (Level 1),
2,000,000 won per month (Level 2),
1,800,000 won per month (Level 3).
-------------------------------------------------------------------
After 1 year experience they get bumped up to level 2 (200k won raise).
Get a TEFL cert and get bounced up again after year 2 to level 1 (300 k raise).
Work 2 years at level 1 and get an additional 200k raise in your monthly salary.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Add in the additional income from doing the afterschool program (up to 400k more again per month) and you can get a healthy pay packet. |

Its one of the reasons GEPIK is having trouble fillling positions. Now that SMOE is paying much higher starting wages....unless GEPIK does the same they wont have any newbies joining them! |

For level 3 it's low. I'm not sure what EPIK is paying for level 1, but for GEPIK it isn't bad. |

I work for GEPIK in an elementary school.
The starting salary is low, but the more teaching experience you have, the higher the salary is.
I got my TEFL certificate in China last year, so I get 200K more. Level 2 (2.0 million).
I think if you take a TEFL course, online or a class, its worth it. Its only 4 weeks. hopefully you will learn something, and the extra 200K a month will pay for it and more by the end of the year.
With GEPIK, I notice most teachers do overtime (2OK). If you are offered, it can bump your monthly pay up.
I average about 7hours/wk. So im getting an extra 500K/month (2.5 mill total for 29 hours). So teachers do between 2-10 extra hours, depending on what the school wants. Some dont get extra classes. Warning. Doing extra hours does get tiring. your voice with be hoarse by the end of the day.
I know that SMOE is more desirable because it is in Seoul. I want to work in Seoul maybe next year. Its not because of the money, but because of its daylife and nightlife. I hate thinking, it 11ish, I better head off to the subway and catch the last train home towards Anyang/Suwon. |
