What would you do if there is a neighbour who turns their TV on loud late at night, early in the morning until 3am. Evil or Very Mad
Is it typical of Korean life to ignore the neighbours?

Most people learn best when they're on the receiving end, so I agree with the above posters. If they don't respond to you banging on the wall to tell them to knock it off, payback is in order. Have fun! Twisted Evil

How about a spot of vacuuming at 3am? I bet that shared wall has a lot of dust where it meets the floor....

You know that apatus in Krea have metal doors, most of em? Do you have a mag lite?
I do. It is exactly one foot long. Takes 5 'D' cell batteries down the spout. I thump the shit outa that cavity door with all my skinny might and ask in my politest 3am tones if they wouldn't mind dropping the fucking volume, and you would never think, but damn me, it works every time. the one time I tried it it did, anyway. Works for all manner of waeguk ailments from couple squabbles, to loud parties to kidz olympics on the floor above. Hurt them. Just hurt them back. They don't expect it.

You could leave a note on the door explaining the situation and requesting a decrease in volume.

You could knock on the door and do the same thing.

When I had an apartment in North Carolina, the girl living above me had a huge dog that she kept on the balcony all day, so it would piss and all the piss would drip down onto my balcony. And she didn't get home until about 11, at which point the beast (dog I mean) would lumber around the apartment for a good 3 hours before wearing itself out. I left a note on the door, and the problem was solved very quickly. We also became somewhat of friends, too.

In university I had a room mate who was a musician and really deaf.
The T.V. was on full blast 5 nights out of 7. It was heinous.

I sympathise, I really do.

This is what I did:

I rang her doorbell to tell her to shut it. She did, after some whining.

I had loud sex to contend with. I'd imitate her and play my music real loud, up to 1 am. Once in a while I'd bang on her door when the TV was on, but not too often. I had a feeling this would be long-term, and being a white monkey, I had to be careful and I had to be patient. She didn't get the hint, but her boyfriend did. Quiet would ensue for a few days, then it was back to Square One.

After a month, every time she had sex, I'd complain to the super. After playing my music on real loud and imitating her wails. I stopped banging on her door. I knew I would fight her, so I was covering my behind.

Two months pass. One night she decided to have her TV on real loud. I banged on the door. She ignored me. After telling her locked-out boyfriend she was a bitch, I went to the guard downstairs and had him tell her to shut it. She did, and complained to her boyfriend about me harassing her for the next half-hour. That's right; she did it out of spite.

I stopped the imitation and the music. I knew things would come to a head soon.

It came sooner than expected.

Four nights later, her sex wails were so loud I started the fight. It was a real cat's fight. It lasted 30 seconds. It was 1.15am. She yelled at me, she was so stinking mad I'd interrupted her fun. Well, duh. I wanted her to yell, and I yelled right back while imitating her wails, which made her madder and louder. She wanted to claw my eyes out, she was so mad. For once, her boyfriend took charge and dragged her away. I told the guard, then the super about the fight the next day. He decided to do something...FINALLY.

Another four nights it started again. I'd just watched the soccer so I was awake, anyway. It went on for hours; they watch porn, then she screams. She likes her games. I didn't start a fight because it was 4 am. I didn't want to, lest I get the blame.

When next day I told the super his solution wasn't working, he told me to call the guard, and the person downstairs from her was complaining. I said that didn't work because she'd yelled back at the guard when he called her to shut up. He gawped at me in surprise.

A couple of days after that, I went and complained again, although she wasn't bothering me much, because I was so dang exhausted from watching the soccer the night before. The super said there was a fight with the people above and below her.

What was said to her I don't know. There's been no sex screams since, and she keeps her TV real low.

My neighbour is a shameless psycho love-hotel actress, but maybe yours is just an inconsiderate paabo with the imagination of a concrete wall. If she won't shut her TV after you've requested her to, it's time to give her some. You need to be loud, you need to harass, then you need to cover your backside. If one person complains, others will, like sheep.

Its amazing how effective the polite yet firm request is. Its also amazing how many people don't even try it.

Of course if that gets ignored, then you can commence hostilities (which is more fun I suppose). For thumping on the roof or ceiling, a heavy fire extuinguisher is many, many decibels above anything else- you could practically knock the entire building down with one.

If you have very noisy neighbors and can be sure the noise volume is cleary beyond a reasonible limit, just call the police. I've done it here and it worked like a charm. Just try to be sure that the noise will go on for at least another 30 when the police will arrive to hear it. Some people recommend recording the noise onto tape, but there's nothing better than having a witness like a Korean cop. Act really pissed when you call them. They will come because they want to prevent the brawl that will break out if they don't come.

Geez! Guys! All the solutions in this thread are so ineffective. Call the cops by dialing 112. Don't bother with the lazy security guard. If you've got borderline annoying noise like the neighbor's tv is a little too loud, that's harder to fix. You could talk to the guy or just wear earplugs.
