Kind humans,
I am looking for a few excellent books on teaching methodologies, or teaching ESL. I am coming to Korea to teach, and I have very little teaching experience. So, I hope that if I can read a few good books, then at least I will have starting point to enter into the teaching field from. |

how much time you have on your hands before you go- however, Dr. David Nunan's books- any of them- might be a good place to start. Just type his name on almost any search engine and it'll pop-up. |

The Penny Ur Books have some teaching methodology information and a lot of good teaching ideas. The titles are: Discussions that Work, Grammar Practice Activities, and 5-Minute Activities. If you go to an online bookseller you can also find listed recommendations and reviews(ex: amazon.com's listmania) by ESL teachers as well. |

For practical teaching:
How to Teach English Barry Sesnan
Teach English Adrian Doff (?)
For theory:
Principles of Language Learning and Teaching Brown (dry, but the best overview of the different theories)
For activities:
Ready-made English Scheiber (good for lower levels)
For lesson ideas:
The Oxford Resource Books for Teachers series -- most of the activities don't seem so good, by the majority of them, with a little planning and tweaking, can be turned the right way.
If you happen to find yourself teaching 'conversational English' (perhaps the most useless of all English classes, but one of the most popular):
LIS Korea has several books with conversations laid out and ready to go.
PNU Press' Small Group Discussion Topics should keep intermediate and higher level students interested.
LID and PNU books are probably only available in Korea. |

I just picked up a book called How to teach English in Asia. i can't remember the auther's name but it is from longman press. its written by a guy who has taught in several different asian countries. There are a lot of books on how to teach english but you have to be careful about which one you chose. i picked this one because it dealt with teaching children in asia and took into consideration cultural differences. also it focuses on teaching efl (english as foreign language) rather than esl (english as a second language). This may not be the best book out there but i think it's a good one. You might want to pick up a couple of different books from different authors to get differing opinions about teaching and ideas on how to teach. |

I recommend The First Days of School by Harry and Rosemary Wong.
It gives a good bit of philosophy, as well as tons of practical advice ranging from record keeping to classroom management, rules, and so on. This book is given to new teachers in my school district and it has saved me more than a few headaches... |
