I want to start applying for jobs early next year, probably in the spring. I would like to leave for Korea by May or early summer. I am open to a hogwan (sp?) or public school position so I would like to apply for both. Will public schools be hiring around the time I want to apply? Also, how long does it take to find a job and finish the hiring process? Ideally, I would like to give my employer here a month's notice, then have another 2 weeks to a month to spend preparing to leave, spending time with family and friends, and visiting a friend in Florida. Hopefully, I will be able to time this so I have the time off that I need but I'm not out of work for too long. Any information would be helpful.

The public school year runs march to july & september to december, more or less. It would be rare to get hired on in may. Hagwons hire year round.

Figure 3 weeks to a month from initial contact to getting on a plane, but sometimes its quicker.

As far as I know it is possible to get hired on mid year for a public school job. Here in Incheon, they are starting to hire more native speakers in public schools. I was brought in at the beginning of June and plan on staying only one more year before returning home.

One thing I've noticed about Korean culture--they really don't plan ahead, ever. If you look at the job boards, most of the posts are looking for people ASAP to maybe two or three weeks away. And it annoys me to no end.

I agree with you there.

If you try to find a job by applying to jobs on the job boards and let them know that you won't be available for two months, you probably won't find much because they'll be desperate and 90% of employers won't want to wait for you.

Also agreed, most of them are scurrying trying to get teachers for the next month. I worked at the company headquarters of a hogwan (who shall remain unnamed) and the department I worked in also housed HR. They were always asking us if we knew anyone who needed a job. It seems like they were always picky unless they were desperate. Then it was all about having a warm body to fill the job.

You might have better luck if you do one of the following: 1) use a recruiter and tell them you won't be available right away. 2) post your resume and at the top in big bold font let them know your availability date (you'll still get spammed by people asking if you can possibly leave yesterday). 3) ask around, see if anyone (maybe on Dave's) is leaving around the time you want to come, if you can find a decent school on your own, send them your resume in advance and let them know you'd like to start in two months. 4) throw caution to the wind, quit your job, etc. and start looking seriously about two or three weeks before you want to come. 5) fly to Korea on your own dime, scout around, find a good job, have airfare reimbursed. Takes a brave heart but lots of people have done it with good results. 6) quit your job at home, work at a temp agency for a few weeks if you have to, until you've found the hogwan of your dreams and are ready to go.

I agree with this person. Even if you put your resume online and say "I will be available at X date" they will still email you. Most recruiters don't bother to read your information, it's all about volume for them.

You might even create an alternate email address so your primary doesn't get spammed by recruiters. After you've found your job, you can abandon it.

Yes, this is a good idea. If they aren't willing to provide you with that information then say, "no thanks."

I can probably be ready to leave in March or I can wait until July. It just depends on how much money I have in the bank and how impatient I am. I am flexible about where I work, but I thought I might have less problems working for a public school. I would also like to have more vacation time, but I guess I can pay my dues as a newbie at a hogwan. I'm not sure what I will qualify for. I have a B.A. in English and about 5 years of experience teaching preschool. Does anyone know what my chances are of getting a job at a public school? Or at least one with fewer problems?

Second semester of school here begins March 2 (March 1 is a national holiday). Thus, in February, most public schools will be looking to fill any second-semester vacancies they may have.

Incorrect. Thats the start of the school year.
Otherwise, some thoughtful advice.
