I have read it in contracts, heard it was being offered, heard it was not being offered siting some 'contribution' wording in contracts, heard it was again being offered at 100,000/month rather than the 200,000 in original contract, and to top it all off, just got word that a raise was being offered at 100,000, but get this, per year not month. If this is the case, what a slap in the face...
Anyone with first hand experience? |

That's hilarious. What does that make it, a .4% raise? Yes, a slap in the face indeed. And then they wonder why their organisations practically have revolving doors. Must be because the foreigners are all homesick, eh? |

In the contract, it does state that the principal may give a 100,000 won per month raise if he is satisfied with the native speaker. To me, every teacher that is re-signing should get that bonus because if they weren't satisfied, they wouldn't ask you to stay on.

I renewed my contract and wasn't not given the payrise which was promised in the first contract should I renew the second(I am a grade 1). I wasn't too happy, but it was something outside the school's power. The morons at the education office arbitarily decided that they didn't want to honour their contractual obligations. |

Which contract says this? I believe it is the provincial government that pays your salary not the principal.
And I don't know about other programs but my GEPIK contract states clearly that this raise is NOT automatic and depends on the teacher contributing towards the education goals of GEPIK (whatever those are ) |

I said it wasn't automatic. Who do you think knows how you performed? It is the principal that is going to get you the raise from the Gyeonggi Education office. |

Sorry the last half of that was for Mr Gwangjuboy not you. Forgot to put the name in. And the eye rolling was for GEPIK.
Anyway maybe your contract is different, but mine states in order to get the raise you must contribute towards these goals. Sounds more like you have to be (relatively) outstanding rather than satisfactory. At least that's probably their justification. It would be interesting to see how many people actually get this raise...if any. |

That clause wasn't in my conract. Even if it was, I would argue that I must have been contributing to the "education goals of GEPIK" because they begged me to renew. Why would a school be so eager to renew my contract if I had not been contributing to the education goals of GEPIK? I was told that the education office made a mistake when they wrote the contracts promising a salary increase so they wouldn't honour that commitment (in Korean so there were no language problems). |

The level 1 pay raise issue isn't about how satisfied (or not) your school is with your performance. The problem is that schools have not been given enough budget money to offer a pay raise.
Either way the whole situation sucks! |

No pay raise for me. However, my rent will increase by 80 000 won, and coupled with inflation, it actually means I will be taking a net pay cut to stay here.
It's not the school's fault. A GEPIK spokesperson assured me personally that I would get a raise, provided I had done my job satisfactorily of course. Nobody at my school thinks I don't deserve the raise, but they say they simply can't/won't give it. It's now pretty clear that he knew damned well I wouldn't get the raise and was simply shifting the blame on to the principal.
It's still a pretty good gig for me at this school, so I'll suck it up for now, but I will be keeping one eye on the position vacant ads from now on. |
