OK I am a little irritated that the camp director asked that I step down , because he said I look Asian. I sent my photos, but the co-ordinators where kyopos so they assumed there wouldn't be any problem with my appearance. General manager thought otherwise it seems.
Interview day he throughs a spanner into the works, and I got booted out. Wish he had decided earlier based on my picture, and I might have been spared the interview.
How does one rat on a camp. I feel like doing it, because they aren't requiring any one to get propper visas |

If you rat the camp out, it's the other foreign teachers that are going to have to pay fines and risk detention and deportation, not the managers of the camp.
Think twice. |

I would think a letter/e-mail to the local immi office in good Korean would do the trick. Something along the lines of: Dear Director, the X School, located at ___ is hiring people with no work visa. What do you plan to do about it? (Immi office addresses are online.)
But I do like the idea of telling the school a few days ahead of time. It gives them some time to sweat before the ax falls. I think I'd say something like: Hey Bozo! My Korean is just as good as yours and my English is a whole lot better. You chose to screw me because of my facial features. Well, screw you. In a few days I'm going to inform the local immigration office of your illegal activities. Join the 21st Century or go out of business. Have a nice day. [/quote] |

"But just take a look at yourself!" would've been my first reply. |

| There is the problem that the other teacher will get stuck with the fines and the like..... You could always let the other teachers know you are reporting him to immigration ahead of time.... If they haven't bailed by the time immigration gets around then its their own fault... |

While this would be courteous, it is not 100% necessary. They have conciously and deliberately agreed to work illegally.
Actually, it might be even better if you contacted them before you contacted the boss of the outfit and told them what you plan to do. The smart ones would bail. |

Get back in touch with the general manager...tell him you will go to immigration UNLESS he pays you 5 mil won....much cheaper than the amount of fines he would have to pay AND you wouldnt have to teach to get it! |

Ya... good advice - extortion is always good for a laugh... unless they send their goons out on Saturday to assist with the payment negotiations...
Simply go to the immigration website and send a note.
http://www.immigration.go.kr/indeximmeng.html
AT the top menu bar... look for "PARTICIPATION" and then click the link for "report of immigration offense"
Problems solved.
For the record, I have no sympathy if they are using illegal teachers and get get turned in. They should do their business properly and get the visas. Getting busted is just the "cost of doing business" and the teachers should know better than to "break the law" in a foreign country. |

Report the b*stard but I wouldn't try and extort him, you aren't doing anyone any favors if you do. Including yourself.

| it sucks they didn't do this before interviewing you. maybe it was a bait and switch interview. ive had a few of those. they advertise a job you actually want, you go down there to the recruiter for the interview, and you get there and they say "actually someone just took this job, but we have another position you can take." it sucks how koreans think too much about what a teacher looks like, but i guess we have to realise that this is they way things are in korea, and you can't force someone who runs a business to hire you. koreans are too blunt sometimes. they should be more like the japanese and just lie through their teeth. but ratting out a camp is kinda extreme. |

On the next occasion be sure to don a George Bush or Tony Blair mask.
You just might get the job. |

Report them for doing what?
You think that Immigration will disapprove of this?
Korean "all foreigners must verify their degrees or face deportation" Immigration?
You'll get laughed out of court.
I can just imagine the wide-eyed looks as you look for the section in the Korean Constitution that provides you with protection from discrimination on the basis of nationality.
Methinks you have much to learn about the land of your ancestors.
By the way, ARE you Asian? |
